"Wonderpot" style is my new favorite poorfag pasta. The basic idea is you cook your pasta in a few cups of broth along with butter/oil, spices, and whatever veggies/meat you want to use all in the same pan. The broth mixture cooks down and forms its own sauce with the pasta starch. It's a great cheap way to make a hamburger helper-like concoction. Sample recipe:

>>
>>9311296
Here's my recipe for Meatballs Cheapanara. Easy to make, tastes good, cheap as balls, good for freezing so you can eat them later.

>1lb 80-20 ground beef, cheapest you can get it
>1lb of Jimmy Dean hot pork sausage, or a cheaper brand if you can find it
>4 slices of store-brand white bread
>1 medium onion
>2 eggs
>1 and 1/2 tablespoons parsley
>1 tablespoon garlic powder
>teaspoon black pepper
>teaspoon salt
>half a green bottle of "Parmesan" "cheese"
>olive oil

Toast your bread slices to all hell in tge morning, just short of burning the fucks, then let them dry out all day. Throw them in a plastic bag and mash them up as best you can, then take the bigger chunks to a cheese grater to get them nice and crumbly. Dice your onion as fine as you can get it, throw it in a food processor or blender if you have one. Cook the onion in a pan until clear with a little olive oil, then drain. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except the olive oil.

Heat your oven to 400F, and lightly grease a 13x9 baking pan with the olive oil. Form meatballs with your hands, about 1-1/2 inch diameter, and put them in the pan. It's okay if they touch a little. You may need to do multiple batches, though. Bake for about 20 minutes. Serve immediately or freeze and reheat in a pot on the stove with sauce. Should round out to like 10 meals worth of meatballs assuming you serve them with Ragu on a pile of bulk spaghetti.

that's a meme. it's fine as long as you're getting enough selenium. Selenium prevents free radical damage in the body, and mercury binds aggressively to selenium - preventing it from being able to protect your body from free radicals - that's what mercury poisoning is: extreme free radical damage. Luckily tuna has loads of selenium, much more selenium than mercury.

The only fish that have more mercury than selenium are sharks, swordfish and whales. Unless you're eating mako shark and killer whale every day (or you're a nursing or pregnant mother or under the age of 3) mercury poisoning is a meme

>>

That's exactly what I do. You just have to mix it in really good and frothy, and stir it again after a minute or two of cooking so you get the nice fluffy texture and no bits of scrambled egg.
>>
>>9316431

There's a lot more that's bad for you in tuna than just mercury and the idea that mercury exposure is a "meme" but the idea that ingesting selenium and mercury in equal doses will cause the two to negate each other is some hardcore bro science. Long lived animals at the top of the food chain accumulate huge amounts of pollutants and that includes more heavy metals than just mercury and a wide range of pesticides as well.

It is indeed very bad to eat a lot of canned tuna and if you're planning to eat a lot of fish in general, you should try to make it fish that are as low on the food chain as possible - anchovies, sardines, etc.
>>
>>9309022
Jesus Christ, man. Why not get some flour and yeast and have those sardines on some nice bread instead?

For $14, I could buy somewhere to the tune of 120 eggs (it's about $6-7 for a box of 60), enough to make two 2-egg omelets every day for a month. You might say to yourself, "wait, wouldn't that give you really bad cholesterol?" Well, I'm comparing it to McDonalds.

Reality: it's not expensive to eat healthy. It's expensive to eat complex ingredients. Frozen veggies are dirt cheap and they can add to any meal. Rice is cheap enough to be a staple in many third world countries. Chicken is one of the cheaper and healthier meals. Eggs are cheap protein and perfectly fine if you don't overdo them. Water is cheap enough to be basically free (sometimes even included in your rent cost), and a healthier alternative to soda. Seriously, drink more water.

Oh, and by the way... you've got four big macs in there. There is no way that whole thing costs $14 unless you live in fucking Ukraine, in which case, I'd be willing to bet $14 could go even further for proper groceries.
>>
Not poor, but I eat like a poor person because muh culture (stuff to make our food is cheap).

Brekkie today was granola and yogurt. Total cost: 50c.
Lunch today was pasta with beans. Total cost: 60c.
Had a peach with lunch: 25c.
Dinner tonight will be rice and cabbage. Total cost: 60c.
Projected total for the day: $1.95US

And I just noticed that this was all vegetarian. Looks like I'm gonna have to have a steak tomorrow to counteract the faggotry.

Out camping because I'm homeless and camping is actually respectable. In my pack I've got rice, mac and cheese (on sale), knorrs, grated parmesan, a bunch of spices. Homemade jerky and pemmican and sunflower seeds for protein and got some dried sausages on sale. Thinking I'll have some sausages and mashed potatoes for lunch. Dehydrated bananas are really good too, cheap af if you invest in a food dehydrator. Filling, crunchy and healthy snack.

Yeah, but it tastes way better with creme fraiche. Without it tastes more like a cheapo bigos (Sauerkraut, fresh cabbage, different sausages and pork with paprica powder = pic related).

You can add some green herbs for the aesthetics or don't mix the creme completely in, letting it have clear red and white patches. But I like to eat it right out of the pot if no one else is at home, so I don't care too much for presentation.

I was planning on making vegetable soup, but I ran out of onions and turnips, so I made some oatmeal, and threw in frozen kale and green peas. To warm it up a bit more, I threw in some of the starchy oat cooking water, and thickened it with some wheat bran.
Voilà, poorfigs
Porridge with greens

Just had some Safeway-brand frosted flakes (they were on sale) and some instant coffee. Gonna have some hot dogs for lunch, then probably pasta for dinner. I'm out of fruit and veg but those will have to wait until I go shopping tomorrow.
>>
>Want some curry
>Chicken and beef are refusing to go on sale
At least burritos were on sale this week. 75c per 1. Not bad when you don't have any meat/tortillas and they're normally in the $2-4 range desu.

Beans and lentils are the absolute best poorfag food. Incredibly cheap and incredibly nutritious.
>>
>>9322184

Poorfag here. What are some tasty meals I can mass produce at the weekend and then freeze/store to last the whole week?
>>
>>9322203
Get dry black beans, soak them in a large bowl with water overnight. You can also use canned beans, but dried are much cheaper
Drain and rinse the beans
In a large pot, fry some vegetables in oil (olive tastes good with beans if you can afford it, saved bacon fat is nice too) until they're soft. I like green peppers and onions, but any vegetable works.
Add beans, plus enough water so that the beans are barely submerged.
Season. I like salt, pepper, cayenne, and cumin.
Simmer for a few hours until beans are soft. Add water if the mixture is too thick. As they start to get tender, mash a few beans against the side of the pot and mix them in to make the broth thicker.
If you're adding leafy vegetables (spinach, kale), put them in near the end.

If you want to eat it now, serve over rice. If you want to freeze, mix it with rice before you freeze it.
This is a complete meal: grains, vegetables, and protein.
If times are tough and you don't have any oil, you can just simmer vegetables with the beans. It won't taste as good and will have less calories.

That sounds pretty good. Thank you.

Will try this, many thanks.

>pizzas with flour tortillas
I still need to try this. Do you bake it or throw it together in a pan like a grilled cheese?
>>
>>9322504
Not him but I made mini tortilla pizzas a few years ago, using a small cookie cutter to make the "dough" then placing the tortilla pieces into my muffin tin, added tomato sauce and cheese, then cooked it for a little while. It was fucking tasty. I'm sure placing the tortilla base on a pizza pan would ensure it doesn't break from the weight of the toppings.

Dinner is jambalaya rice with roast beef and will likely be dinner for the next couple or so nights.

Not today, but on Thursday I had frozen Tyson chicken nuggets tossed in bottled buffalo sauce with 2 potatoes baked in the microwave topped with butter and "shredded Mexican cheese blend" on the side.

Why not just cook the oatmeal and fry the egg separately?

works with pita bread and other flat breads like Naan too.

>>9322504
Put some tomato paste, toppings & cheese on some sort of flat bread and throw it in the oven or even a toaster oven works.

Get miso paste. Even if it's $6 a tub will last you forever. Boil some chunks of the pork with some potatos, carrots and onion in a pot with a few spoons of miso paste in it. Quick, easy, healthy and cheap Ton-jiru (pork soup). Japanese staple when you're sick and in winter too.

Brekkie today was a tart damson (quetsche) with yogurt and honey to dip it in. Total cost: 69c
Mid morning coffee with milk. Total cost: 41c. This should also be added to >>9317718 as I'd forgotten to include it in my summary that day.
Lunch today (pic related) was vegetable rice with butter-braised (not sure 'braised' is the right English word, but Google translates it that way so that's the word I'm using) with smoked paprika. Also, a rocket salad. Total cost $1.91
Dinner will be pasta with cauliflower. Total cost: 86c
Projected total for the day: $3.87
Corrected total for 20170818: $2.36

Not to be preachy, but eating cheap in Ameriland is really, very easy.

That's not preachy. Food is produced in huge quantities on this continent.
Ingredients are cheap, and if you cook for yourself, you won't spend much.
>>
>>9311432
Why not buy in season produce for much cheaper instead of questionable meat and make something else?
>>
>>9317718

Do you actually cook individual portions or in batches and then freeze multiple servings? Because that's really how you also cut down on gas/electricity if you're genuinely eating on a budget.

BEST meal you could ever possibly have.
>>
I just ate some unseasoned baked chicken with ketchup, and white rice. I use Pringles as a scoop to eat the rice (reduced salt pringles of course).
>>
>>9325813
Kind of a combination of the two. For example, the beans for my pasta and beans from >>9317718 were cooked as part of a batch of plain, unsalted beans ahead of time, but I made a soffritto to order and build my dish on top of that, adding the already cooked beans, some water and, finally, the pasta, so the dish is individual, but the beans themselves are batch.
The rice and cabbage, however, I cooked several portions of at once and just eat it as leftovers.
For the rice, from >>9325556, that was cooked individually using instant. Had I used conventional rice, the cost would've been about 17c less. I cook conventional rice six servings at a time, eating one and storing the other five. I keep instant on hand for when I forget to make another batch.
The prawns were cooked to order because reheated prawns are fucking awful.
The cauliflower for tonight is cooked already, five servings (so batch). Just need to boil pasta to eat with it (individual).

Does that make sense or am I overexplaining? I do that sometimes.

>>9325783
Very true. Convenience is expensive. For example, a serving of conventionally prepared rice costs me 5c. A serving of instant is 22c, a markup of about 350%.
And dinner kits like Hamburger Helper are similar. $1 for a box seems cheap, but when you figure it's 5oz of pasta and 1oz of a mixture of cornstarch and stock powder, you realise how costly it really is (pasta can be had 69c/lb, stock cubes cost 99c for a box of 20 and cornstarch costs near nothing; the markup is about 263%).

couple tortillas dipped in sour cream.. just lost $400 at the casino. Im such a fucking faggot retard. Got $20 to feed myself for 5 days and nothing in the fridge but ketchup

>Trader Joes still hasn't brought back the Sardines in Harissa Sauce yet

I've still got 1 tin left from the last time they stocked 'em 6 months ago. I want to eat them so badly but I'm afraid that if I don't have them around for a horrible family tragedy I'll probably kill myself.

Anybody else tried the Harissa 'Dines and know of a good spicy alternative to them?

poorfag here too, 'dines and rice is great, I suggest adding kimchi.

Add the miso after boiling tho, boiling miso makes it gritty.

Miso is super delicious though and you can make easy miso broth by using chicken or beef stock (whether you reuse a carcass or use powder or a cube is up to you). Add in noodles and veggies, maybe an egg, and you can have tasty home made ramen that's not terrible for you like the prepackaged stuff. You can also use miso for marinate, or mix it with some butter (or margarine I guess) and spread it on toast, or flavour vegetables with in after baking.

Miso soup is also fairly cheap and good comfort food, I will say that instant dashi or bonito and konbu can be pricy but you can sub the bonito with dried mushrooms, and those tend to be cheap at asian markets. Green onions and tofu are already cheap and you can totally throw in other veggies like potatoes and carrots if you want.

Made cabbage and potatoes with chicken sausage. Pretty good. Ate it with a piece of focaccia.
