Me and my buddies got into an argument recently about the differences between a pan and a skillet. I asserted that a pan and skillet are two different things, used to cook different stuff. My buddy said that skillets are a food you cook. We had an argument about why is it called a skillet if its cooked in a skillet, and then we couldnt figure what is named after what. Later i tried to go to bed but i remembered that pancakes are called pancakes cause you cook them in a pan. Then we started arguing about what is a pancake vs. what is a skillet, then it turned to what is a pancakes vs. what is a flapjack. Im losing my fucking shit over this but i cant stop thinking about it. Please can someone clarify all of this so i can jerk off and go to sleep?
Once upon a time, the world contained more dictionaries and fewer faggots.
They're too different things. I argued about this with my mother last week.

Swear to god i dont smoke weed. I just cant stop thinking about this shit.
In the spirit of folky debate, I'm just going to take a stab at this without referencing anything.
>pan
Any cooking vessel with shallow walls primarily used for dry heat cooking.
>skillet
A subset of pans that are heavier and more durable and are therefore suited for higher-heat cooking.
Also, colloquially a dish cooked and served in a skillet, often a breakfast "scramble" of eggs, cheese, etc.
>pancake
They are also sometimes called skillet cakes. Sometimes flapjacks. My best guess is that they are all quick breads, usually leavened, cooked in a pan and that the primary difference is regional dialect. This is where I feel less confident-- there might be a real difference between a flapjack and a pancake, e.g. the diameter or thickness of the cake.

Thank you so much for giving a brief explanation for all of this. I know googling this would have been a quicker route to finding the differences but i think someone with more knowledge and experience in the matter could better answer my question in the context of asking. Thank you so much
