Hey, /ck/, I'm planning to buy my first set of knives and am wondering whats the best place to go to get a quality set.
Also, I've heard that any reputable store will let you try the knifes out in the back with cheap vegetables.

Sets are for fags. Buy one, maybe two quality knives to start off and mix it up from there. Brand loyalty doesn't apply to knives really, you'll need a bit of everything. Grab something at your skill level and move on from there.
A block is nice to have though, or a wall magnet.

this, just pick up a decent knife from a restaurant supply store, or if you don't mind sharpening shit everytime you use it, pickup a couple of kiwi knives from the asian market, they're dirt cheap. the kiwis are great for develping your knife skills and learning how to properly sharpening without having to risk ruining a good knife

2nding this. You don't need a set. You need:
1) A chef's knife, santoku, or chinese cook's knife (whichever you prefer)
2) A serrated knife for bread
3) Tools for sharpening.
