in my neck of the woods it's usually just cold cut sandwiches at bodegas and maybe fritura/fried meat chunks. op's image just looks like a restaurant's take out station.

yea, there's no bodegas i've ever seen with a fuckin buffet. they're a corner convenience store, dumbass op, not a salad bar deli.

OP here, I'm on the east coast of burgerland. Here, bodegas have your typical deli sandwiches and stuff along with a small hot food bar that can only be accessed by the workers behind the counter. You just tell them what you want and they fill up a take-out container. You pay either by the container size, or the total weight.
There's usually a selection of rices, beans, fried stuff and different meats and stews. Maybe they're just an east coast thing then.

I don't go to bodegas, but if the hipsters are to be believed, you should get lingua tacos, because there's something in them that makes you ejaculate the second it touches your tongue.

Long Island. I see tons of them around, and they usually have huge signs advertising that they have hot food. Usually I've only stopped for coffee but the food always looks good.

ah. i figured queens for whatever reason but that makes sense. anywho, get a rice and build up from there. the quality of the rice is usually a good indicator for whether or not a hispanic eatery is shit imo. grainy but tender, not too salty, not super greasy. as for protein, you can't go wrong with any of the stewed meats. ox tail is especially tasty but not exactly a regular menu item so in that case chicken or beef is fine. sides are a toss up for me but folks usually get stuff like maduros/fried sweet plantains, fried green plantains, avocado salads, and whatever. chances are if it looks good it'll taste good so try whatever catches your eye.

long island. that makes some sense, as no standard bodega here in town will have that much extra room to devote to basically a half-restaurant.
