The shape holds more cheese sauce than the plain tiny slippery elbow macaroni. Same with spirals. Spirals and cartoon shapes are the only Kraft mac n cheese I will eat. Elbow original one is gross.

I think this is the real answer. Shapes always did taste better, I think its because they cook slightly differently and more cheese covers each individual noodle.

I'm going to try to do an experiment where I use the cheese packet from the normal Kraft Dinner on a cartoon shaped one and vice versa and see if the results are the same side by side with the normally prepared elbows and cartoon shapes.
