elaborate. Romaine is better and healthier for salads but one big ass piece of lettuce on a burger adds nothing in terms of flavor, no additional nutrition and is essentially useless.

Iceberg, when shredded offers a nice crunch, helps to elevate tomatoes off of the patty and doesn't slide off when eaten.

I disagree. When you shred it, all the small pieces gets pulled out when you take a bite, then they slip down on your chin and you get dressing all over your chin. When you have one big leaf, the friction between the burger and bun over the entire leaf keeps it in place, allowing you to bite trough it without anything slipping out.

Also, I would absolutely smash.

only if you overdress it. Iceberg stands up better to heat as well. This ensures you get a better crunch. I normally don't like Iceberg on anything because it's pretty lousy imo, but on a burger shredded iceberg keeps the crunch even under heat.
