Incredible. For only 30$ here in TN I haven't tasted better. Even knob Creek had nothing in this. Anyway whiskey thread.

Buffalo Trace is some decent bourbon. Cheers OP! Ancient Age is my cheap go-to, but I don't mind a bit of Jamesons or Michael Collins sometimes.

Maybe I need to be more experienced. I can drink knob Creek fine but the flavors are more distinguished in what I've had so far and seems to burn less.

maybe not enough. But i have enjoyed most scotches and not too many bourbons. I guess I just felt more inspired to spend my money on scotch.

It's dirt-cheap bourbon here in Kentucky. I keep a 1.75 in my house at all times for general boozing. $22 or so for a half-gallon of not-completely-terrible 90-proof? Works for me.

Honestly I hate your state, Kentucky, more than anything. I'll tell
Youna story

>driving down to TN from IL to visit my gf

>some sub joint connected to a gas station and I order a panini with ham

>*bitch look* oh sure if you want...
>costanza look at her and throw a fiver on the counter, grab my shit food and eat it in the car. Can't even finish it

To be fair I don't know what I expected from a bundle working at a gas station but shit man it's been three years and I still think about it. Anyway my dad always hated Kentucky and now I see why. Fuck that state. Still your liquor is good so I'm starting to forgive. My dad is not

>>9198921
Buffalo trace is pretty solid. It's my go-to in that price range, and about the cheapest bourbon that's good enough to drink straight.

Evan Williams is decent for the price, but I only use it for mixing with stuff.

Woodford Reserve is my general go-to bourbon. Most of the time that's what you'll find at my house.

For more expensive than Woodford, I mostly like to try out various stuff. I bought a bottle of one of Woodford's Master's Collection to celebrate a promotion, and it was really good, but overpriced.

I also recently got a bottle of Booker's for a gift. It's also really good bourbon, but at 128 proof it's a little too strong to drink straight.

This is the well at the bar I go to. Surprisingly not bad. I'm a big Manhattan guy, so I drink a ton of Old Crow.

Also, pic related is what I buy. Idaho has state run liquor stores, so my usual handle of Jim Beam is like $36 here when it was $24 back in Georgia. Now I buy pic related. Handle of this is $24. Surprisingly good. Pretty sure it's made with the same mash and distillery as Buffalo Trace? Or one of the other solid quality whiskeys.

I tried it because people said it was awesome. it was slightly more expensive than my go-tos and did not taste as good. It wasn't terrible or anything. Perfectly acceptable. I wouldn't buy it again, though, when I can get better for less.

my go-tos being the McClellend's single malts (my preference is their Speyside) and Lismore. These are fantastic scotches for the the price. Lismore outclasses pricier stuff, IMO, but unfortunately the store near me discontinued it.

McClelland's packaging looks really cheap and gay but the spirit is great

Not trying to shitpost but what's the appeal of Irish whiskey? It tastes like the worst of both worlds to me.
>>
>>9209322
I like it, but not that much. It's inoffensive. It isn't very peaty, it isn't very sweet, it isn't very rich. It isn't very anything. That is to say, it's nice, but it's not one that I'd ever describe as memorable.

Certainly one of the least interesting Islay whiskies (but one of the best distillery tours).

I'm fairly new to whisky and I wanted to try an islay one after I had a bottle of dalwhinnie (it was advertised as a smooth highland, so i wanted to get it as an entry), but after that, I knew I want something a bit less inoffensive, so I pretty much went blindly into islay whisky

>Do yourself a favor and go get a dram of Glendronach now so you can see how silly your taste is.

they're my go-tos because of the price point, not because I think they're the world's best scotches, and I carefully worded my post to make that clear. They're good single malts that taste better and are also cheaper than Dewars Bowmore J&B etc, which is the tier that I can afford. I know there's way better scotch on the market, dude. But Bowmore ain't. Have fun vacationing to a distillery. I'll continue wage-slaving.

lagavulin 2017 was good value and excellent taste (got a try of it in the distillery)

Bought two, may sell one and drink one in a few years

>That's according to Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2015, a highly regarded ranking of fine global whisky. Specifically, reports the Telegraph, the top title belongs to Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013, from Japan’s oldest whiskey distillery, Suntory, founded in 1923.
>What's more, for the first time in the 12 years the Whisky Bible has been published, not a single Scottish whisky makes the bible’s top five. If that wasn’t bad enough for Scotland, which along with Ireland is the spiritual home of the drink, the best European whisky in the latest edition is English.

I don't understand the Ardbeg meme. It's peaty, but without any body underneath it. All I can taste is smoke then bland nothingness. For a smoky whisky you need some richness, like in a Lagavulin. Without it, it's like an American IPA. All hops and no beer, all smoke and no whisky.
>>
>>9218661
Ardbeg is a great and versatile mixer, so is Laphroaig 10. Bowmore 15 it outstanding too but it shines more in drinks with a higher ratio where the whisky is at least 50% of the drink).

What you have to remember is that these were never considered a top-shelf drink until prices went insane because of confused memesters. So whisky consumption is becoming overly ritualized and joyless as poorfags try to get a piece of the action and look for someone to tell them how to enjoy a thing so it doesn't "go to waste".
>>
>>9218725
>What you have to remember is that these were never considered a top-shelf drink
Totally disagree with that, Ardbeg has always been a premium whisky, in the UK at least. The 10 year old is actually very good value when you consider it is non chill filtered, natural colour, and has an age statement. You won't see many other £40 whiskies that aren't special releases with that. For context Laphroaig 10 is usually around £30 and Lagavulin 16 is around £50. Mid tier would be something like Highland Park 12 / Aberlour 12 for £25 and bottom tier would be Bells / Famous Grouse / Grants etc which are usually sub £20

Sounds meme tier, but try Ardbeg out of a glencairn glass and let it sit for 10 minutes or so until you try it. Add as little water (not ice, when it cools down it loses a lot) as possible and take small sips. IMO you really shouldn't be mixing single malt whisky, but I am not going to sit and tell you what to do with your drink.
>>
>>9218954
>Sounds meme tier, but try Ardbeg out of a glencairn glass and let it sit for 10 minutes or so until you try it. Add as little water (not ice, when it cools down it loses a lot) as possible and take small sips.
I'm not really sure what the point of this statement is, there is nothing in that style of drinking that applies especially to Ardbeg and not whisky in general.

And you absolutely should be mixing single malt. And drinking it neat. It depends on what you're in the mood for.
>>
>>9218965
Mixing single malt is a waste of money the vast majority of time. A blend would do the same job, if you were wanting smoke then just use a smoked blend.
>>
>>9218988
Spoken like someone with no experience mixing with scotch. Yes, smoked blends exist. No, it is not the same result
>>
>>9219004
When you're masking the taste of the whisky with various other things, then yes, it is the same result. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you hadn't known what you were putting into it.

Stop wasting good single malt on shit.
>>
>>9218965
The point of that statement is that unlike a lot of widely available "normal" whisky, in my experience Ardbeg needs to sit for a bit and not be drunk from a wide glass as it tends to lose something if you do it that way. I was initially underwhelmed by it, but it is worth exploring further.

As for mixing, it is your drink so do what you will with it, but I think it is a waste of money and good spirit to be mixing it. Plenty of high quality blends exist for this purpose, I don't think there is any point in buying expensive whisky with lots of subtle flavours if you are going to mix it. Same goes for ice, that spoils it.
>>
>>9219053
You're just speculating because you're afraid to "waste" precious mass produced liquor and find out

It makes a difference, but this argument is pointless because you're one of those people who needs ritual and mixing is against "the rules"

Enjoy being told how to enjoy things
>>
>>9219149
You're the reason shit's so expensive and why there's scarcity now.
>>
>>9219307

Strathisla is Glen Moray tier man. Get yourself some good lesser known Speyside like Blair Athol or Glenlossie.
Laphroaig is delicious stuff but its not for everyone because of the "medicinal" quality of the smoke. If you want to get into Islay and heavy peat start with a peated highland like Clynelish or a Campbeltown like Springbank or Glen Scotia
