Punch comes from the Hindi word "panch" [spoiler] doubtlessly written a different way[/spoiler] meaning "5" and the whole idea is to create something that balances a combination of 5 flavors. The rhyme means to use one part something sour, 2 parts something sweet, 3 parts something with alcohol, 4 of any other sort of liquid, usually tea in classic recipes, and then a dash of some spice, usually nutmeg. Admittedly, this recipe works for boozy punches, but you can substitute to your hearts content and still end up with something kids will like.
