Cream cheese on its own is more tolerable because it's basically thickened milk and cream, whereas butter is just fat. Eating too much fat on its own will give you diarrhea/stomachache, but cream cheese has some protein and carbs in it to make it a more complete food. Still, I know plenty of people who are grossed out at eating a bit of cream cheese or sour cream on its own. It's too rich for them I guess.
