You totally missed the point of that scene. He didn't order the most expensive things on the menu. Rather, he demonstrated that he was very knowledgeable about the food, unlike all the older guys who were completely clueless, coulnd't even read the menu, and simply ordered what the first guy did because they didn't want to admit they were clueless. Price had nothing to do with it; it was about knowledge.
