That's impossible because there are various profiles of scotch. You can get a smokey scotch. You can get a salty scotch. You can get a sweet scotch. You can get my Scot dick up your ass for all I care. But don't say "Scotch is bad" when you don't even know there are many kinds of scotch.
>>
>>8997441
Having flavor variation is meaningless is a bit useless if the basic flavour tastes rough and harsh.

Scotch is whisky.

Whiskey is everything else, and Irish is the answer to that. Even nigger-tier swill like Killbaggan is better than the best bourbon.

at least we can all agree that bourbon is the fucking worst

Take a swing at this. Stay away from "smoky" and "rich". It's somewhat basic advice, but if you really don't know if you'll like something just ask your liquor store/department manager (looks like an alcoholic in uniform) for some help. Those guys usually like discussing brands and drinks with customers.
>>
I've found a few scotches that I love

I've found a few American that are bearable

I've never found any Irish I don't hate
>>
>>8997538
well im devoted to mid shelf rye so what do you recommend?
and why should i avoid rich and smokey?
im a cigarette smoker too if that matters
>>
>>8997538
This. Good stores will help you a lot of the time.

Though you've got to watch out sometimes, I've been to a couple where the people in the shop are arseholes that have a superiority complex over people who don't know what they're looking for.

>>8997544
Being a smoker doesn't really make a difference, smoky whisky has a peaty flavour, very different to cigarette smoke.

I would say try one from each region (Highlands, Speyside,Islands, Islay, Lowlands, Campbeltown) and see which you prefer.

>well im devoted to mid shelf rye so what do you recommend?
I'd recommend saving up some cash. Scotch is one drink you really don't want to skimp on.
>and why should i avoid rich and smokey?
You implied you wanted smooth sweeter citrusy scotch, yea? That's the opposite of rich and smoky. Rich scotch has very strong flavor and smoky is...well it's smoky.
>im a cigarette smoker too if that matters
You might want to get something a little richer then if your tastebuds are numb.

Here's a chart of the general regions of scotch origination. They all have their own basic flavor profiles.

im really excited to drink some new stuff
any brands i should keep an eye out for?
>>
>>8997588
I like loads of them, just try whatever you can find. One of my favourites is Lagavulin 16 year, though it's one of the strongest, smokiest ones.
>>
>>8997597
>though it's one of the strongest, smokiest ones.
i like bitter things so i might enjoy that
thanks for the advice
>>
>>8997610
Bitter is one of the things you won't find in scotch actually. I can't think of any bitter ones particularly. It's just got a strong whisky flavour.

I'd recommend you try as many as you can by buying small bottles of each thing. Keep in mind it can be an expensive hobby though.
>>
>>8997588
Good! Experimenting with a new drink is always a fun time.

There are lots of scotch brands. If you really want to get into it there's several books about scotch, typically single malt only but there may be blended scotch books as well.

My first scotch was Highland Park 12 year. It was a highschool graduation gift from my dad. It was smoky and strong and I got ripshit hammered with him that night while smoking cigars. Good times.
>>
>>8997628
Cigars are something I've never really done. I like whisky a lot, but since I don't smoke I've never given cigars much of a thought.
>>
>>8997643
I don't smoke either, at least as far as my doctors know. I just have a cigar every now and again when it's that perfect night with some nice tall cold ones or a good class of scotch. Sometimes I'll even bring my pipe out if I get the urge.

Try out a cigar with your next glass. You said you liked Lagavulin 16 so you could probably pick just about any cigar because it wouldn't overpower the drink.
>>
>>8997680
I wouldn't even know where to buy one honestly. Maybe it's something I'll try some time, it might spice up the drinking.
>>
>>8997690
Google "cigar stores near me", if they have a walk-in humidor they're probably legit. If nothing comes up there's internet retailers too.

There really is nothing else quite like a good hearty meal followed by some smooth scotch and a savory cigar.

>>
>>8997347
Whichever you like best or are on the mood for. Jameson gold label and Redbreast are a two of my favorites.

I'm partial to younger Irish but sometimes like something a with bit more smoke or spice. Jim Beam rye and Ardbeg 10 year old offer good quality/price ratios for bolder tasting whiskey.

The only Canadian whiskey I've tried didn't taste adulterated was 40 Creek.
>>
American Rye is one of my favorites for a reasonable price. But I've never met a Whiskey genre I didn't like
>>
>>8999003

>>
>>8999282
I don't understand why people would make their decision based on price. Alright, you mgiht not have much cash, but I don't think whisky should be for getting drunk anyway. You should splash out on an expensive one and enjoy it over a long period.
>>
>>8999496
I don't drink it to get drunk, but I might not have the cash on hand to buy a nice ~$50 bottle of Scotch, a ~$20 bottle of rye whiskey is reasonable though

it might not be like candy sweet like your favorite mikes hard lemonade but it is
when people say its sweet they dont mean like rum or sugar beet, but it is indeed sweet
Scotch, on the other hand, uses mostly or all barley in its mash and the glucose content of corn is much higher. That glucose is what gives bourbon its easily recognizable sweetness. 51%+ corn in the mash is why bourbon is so sweet.

Every variety of whisk(e)y is good in its own ways. Good bourbon has its place. Good scotch has its place. Good irish has its place. Good canadian exists I assume, I've never had the pleasure of trying one. Writing off entire varieties is sports team loyalty-tier retardation though. My personal go-tos are Elijah Craig 12 and Ardbeg 10, always keep a bottle of each in stock even in my poorest times.

>>
>>9005399
Ignore >>9005444 because Jamesons is fucking terrible.

Get yourself a speyside single malt, or a milder highland one. Don't start on the smoky scotch because it's an acquired taste.

Start with scotch though, because it's infinitely better than the vast majority of bourbons. Get one that's at least 10 years matured too.
>>
>>8997347
>Scotch
>Contains malted barley

Ya see, this is why shit stuff like Johnnie Walker can claim to be 'Scotch'.

Blends are basically Satan.

Teacher's blended has the highest ratio of malt whisky (Scotch) to grain whisky (vodka) at roughly a third malt.

Johnnie Walker red can be as little as 20% malt whisky and still count as 'Scotch' for export purposes.

I'm a purist; for me, it's not scotch unless it's 100% malt whisky, preferably single-origin.
It's also not real Scotch to me unless the barley has been malted with peat- peated malt being the #1 flavour differentiator between Scotch and other whiskies.

I drink Ardmore for Highland style, Lagavulin for Islay style, and Smokehead (another Lagavulin product) when I'm poor.

Anyone that says Scotch is harsh has only ever had bad Scotch.
>>
>>9006521
I can understand how. If you get used to scotch the big vanilla character of bourbon from new oak casks can seem a bit cloying and off-putting.
>>
>>9006644
This. I quite like scotch from bourbon casks, but when I have American stuff it tastes like vanilla ice cream. The flavours in a scotch are subtle, but in Bourbon they're smacking you in the face.
>>
>>8997502
Just find a bottle of this shit, kōhai.
-Highlands style, so lighter and dryer than lowlands, Campbell, Islay or Speyside
-Still single-malt
-Last Highlands distillery that peats their malt

Did a Scotch tasting day with my mates a few years ago, this one came out tops (over some whiskies costing $150+ a bottle).

-Intense flavours of sea salt, iodine, seaweed, tar, wood smoke and leather
-Inexpensive compared to its big brother Lagavulin
-Slightly softer than Lagavulin but will still happily shake your tastebuds awake

Add a teaspoon or two of spring water to lighten the palate an open up the flavour profile.

Scotch. No question.

Imagine being this much of a poof
>>
>>9007072
holy fuck you colossal autist stop being pedantic I was following the schema laid out in the OP

I like aged bourbon on ice as a comfy but affordable sipping beverage, and I like 3mo or less 80%+ corn moonshine straight from the clay jug as a means to rapid inebriation

have a bit of openness to new things, my dude
>>
>>9007149
just because its corn mash hardly makes it whiskey
and not all moonshine is made from corn squeezings
im from virginia so dont even try
you sound butthurt
>i drink moonshine im badass
i bet you buy your shine from the liquor store in those novelty mason jars haha
>>
I love scotch but I fucking hate scotch elitists, you sound like faggot fanboys with your absurd loyalty
>>
>>9007165
again, following the OP. yes the specific brand I like is the meme clay jar one. I don't think there's anything particularly badass about that, it just is tasty and easy to drink in large quantities. I don't give a shit where you're from, but I'm glad that you're proud of your state's produce
>>
>>9006666
mate, it's fucking 5-6 yr old Ardbeg and shit, it's nothing like Lagavulin.
You can hardly taste salt or smoke, sure, there is some peat, but nothing special

probably a Smokehead salesman/ambassador trying to say it's best Islay Scotch underage

My dick bro

I like the Islays. I've been trying different shit for a little while now.
Picked up a bottle of Bowmore 12 last weekend and it sure tasted boring after having 110 proof Ardbeg
>>
>>8997347
If I'm going cheap I tend towards bourbon but if I am buying the good stuff for an occasion then I go for a good scotch.
>>

>110 proof

Why do americans do this? It baffles me no end.

What's a good entry level single malt? My local store carries a few brands but I've only ever tried Lagavulin.
>>
>>9007494
Not you, just the american way of saying how strong alcohol is. They just seem to double its strength for no apparent reason.

If it's 55% alcohol call it that.

All of those are pretty good, but my first was the Glen Moray 12. Really nice and smooth speyside, very drinkable, and not too expensive. So maybe consider that one.
>>
>>9007499
oh, ok
I'm sorry I did that
>>
>>9007504
I'll give it a go, thanks.

Highland Park 12 if you want a good all-rounder type, a decent mix of sherry sweetness with a bit of smoke; Glenfiddich 15 (aka Solera) is a decent one, maybe a touch less intimidating for beginners. Glenfarclas have a very good 12yo for those who prefer an overall sweeter style. If you wanna try the really peaty / smoky ones without going overboard, I'd suggest a blended malt like Islay Mist 12yo, or maybe the NAS Jura like Elixir / Prophecy.

>Pic is because of those prices...
>20 quids for Bowmore Small Batch, 60 bucks in Canuckistan.
>Most other bottles average 3 to about 8 times these prices here...
>Considering moving to the UK...

Probably import tariffs or something.

Those are cheap by UK standards even, I'm not sure where the picture has been taken.
>>
