Late weekend beer thread? Drinking, trying to find, brewing, cellaring?

I had this one earlier this night. Bit to heavy on the garlic notes for me.

I just got back from the grocery store and saw they had a "make your own 6 pack deal" so this is what I got. Haven't ever tried any of these before they might all be bad.

Having this sort of deal is dreamy to alot of people. If the beers are all good at that it is where we wish to be at!

>>8982178
First Westy 12 i had was mindblowing, second one i had was infected! The one that made the mark in my mind was sadly the second one, one of the worst beers i have ever tasted,

Had this one a couple of nights ago but still wanted to post it here as it was pretty special. Not a whole lot of chili heat to talk about, but the rest of the beer was fantastic. One of the top 10 stouts for me!
>>
>>8982200
That sucks man. This is the second one I've had (last one was a few years ago) and this one is definitely better. The first one was in one of those exported 6 packs with the glasses and I don't think it was stored well during shipping (drank it in Japan). I'm in Belgium right now and there are numerous shops that sell them around here. Going to by 24 or so to take home with me.

Even the monks screw their shit up at times i guess. Got two bottles when i picked the bad one up. It is marked best before 03.12.18 so this december! Probably will try it the coming fall and hope the other one was a faulty cap or something!

Had this one tonight as well, Very nicely done lower abv bourbon barrel stout!
>>
how do you guys rank innis & gunn?

You wasted half of your deal with shitty ipas which probably taste exactly like any other ipa "muh hop explosion".

And one with a fruit beer which will likely taste bad.

My god, americans have such a bad taste for beer.
>>
>>8982482
Purple Haze isn't amazing but it's not a bad beer.

So you don't like IPAs. Cool. Other people do.

I'm not even that anon btw. He probably lives in the PNW where 75% of the beer on the shelf is a damn IPA.

I actually just turned 21 a month ago and know nothing about beer and wanted to try some stuff. The first anon was right, he IPAs were mostly the same except the Hi-wire stuff was actually really terrible. My favorite was red bridge then the sugar creek then purple haze. All of those were actually pretty nice, now i know IPAs aren't for me. Back to my modelo
>>
>>8982612
I know there are there are way too many IPAs and a lot aren't great, but the bubble will burst and the extra fluff will go away. Sadly it's the same thing with breweries themselves. Back in the early 2000s there were only so many microbreweries, now they are everywhere. Unfortunately, I think supply exceeds demand, as anyone with a homebrew kit, that has friends that like their beer, starts a brewery.

Well knowing nothing about beer (as you said) and being 21 for a month, I put little stock in your tastes for beer(no offense). I'm 35 (this month) and have been drinking craft beer since around 2000.

Maybe you're right with those beers though, I can't say as I've only had the Purple Haze, Red Bridge (wasn't impressed at all), and the Apocalypse.

Happy Birthday anon!
>>
>>8982643
Oh its fine, I probably wouldn't put much stock in my taste if I had your experience.

It was my first time trying craft beer and over half of the beers were IPA so I figured that they had to be somewhat diverse. The IPAs were actually the worst out of all the things I got.
What are some craft beer you would recommend? But thanks!
>>
>>8982670
Can you get beers from Bell's, Founders, Great Divide, Stone, Great Lakes breweries? Most of those are pretty solid.

Lots of good imports as well, Belgian ales, German wheat beers, etc.

I love IPAs but "love" would only apply to a handful. I can drink all kinds of them but my favorite would probably be Bell's Two Hearted Ale.

I love Shiner but had never had this before, was in a family reunion 6 pack; was pretty good, little on the sweet side though.

Bought a 6 pack 2-3 weeks ago or so of New Belgium 1554 that I wasn't immediately impressed with but holy shitfuck is it good when heating spicy foods (which I've come to find happens with quite a few beers)

Had this last night and didn't really like it much. The alcohol wasn't well hidden and it wasn't complex like I expected. No where near Rochefort 8 for me.

Tonight I'm having difficulty choosing between an IPA, Session IPA, Belgian wheat, and a Gose. Freshness says I should go with the IPA/Session so I don't sit on them but it was a hot day and the wheat/gose seem appealing.

I'm the first anon. I never said I didn't like IPAs, like >>8982560 implied. Just like you tasted them, they are basically the same.

IPAs are just a bait for newfags who want to look cool. They have some hip logo and art on bootle, "hop explosion", but they are just the same taste all over the place and sometimes overly bitter because "lmao bitter beers for le beer lovers".

If you ever come back to this thread, I recommend you to try different styles. They actually taste different from each brewer and are actually complex.

>now i know IPAs aren't for me

No need to stop to drink IPAs. Just stop wasting all your money with them.

>>8982643

The thing is that IPAs are literally the easiest beer to brew. I know it because my cousin actually has a business with brewing and is actually earning some easy money by just brewing generic IPAs and some nice beers.

Needless to say, everyone drink the lame IPA, while the nicer styles are left untouched. Also, they take much more time to brew, almost as twice as IPAs, which take around 1 to 2 months.
>>
>>8984329

Holy crap, I never thought I'd find someone here who drank it before.

I had this one at my first time in the UK and honestly it tasted more like Cola than beer.

It was a nice experience and the beer came in a nice box. I wish I could buy more of it because it looks like a nice gift for people who don't really know about beer.

Colorado > Great lakes = New England > Midwest > Mid-Atlantic >>>> West Coast

Seriously, fuck west coast beers.
>>
>>8985418
The west coast can make anything really well, except ipas. I think Stone ipa is okay though.
>>
>>8985502
It's everything else that's the problem, not their IPAs. They seemingly have no concept whatsoever of balance and use high-alpha hops in everything.
>>
>>8985509
I feel the opposite. Everything I've had from Alesmith, Bootlegger, Stone, etc. that hasn't been an ipa has ranged from good to great. Every ipa I've had from any of them has had 0 balance like you said.
To be fair though, I haven't tried anything from the west coast in years now. I'll still buy Deschutes once in awhile though. The only thing I haven't cared for from them was sage fighter.

That's just not true.

You have your English IPAs, which aren't extremely hoppy.

and then you have your east coast IPAs, which are a delightful combination of the malty English style and the hoppy West Coast style.

East Coast IPAs are my fav.

This is going to be a bit of a long post, but here goes.

The two most recent beers I've tried are Anchor Steam Beer and Spaten lager. Both were very enjoyable drinks, and have won back my respect for lagers. I've also tried Pauwel Kwak, though I found it almost intolerably sweet, like malt soda.

The next beer on my list is Duchesse de Bourgogne, which is apparently a Flanders red ale; is anyone else familiar with this style?

This is actually the best brew ever, it's unironically my favorite beer ever and I just discovered it a few weeks ago, I'm disappointed that no one told me about it until now
>>
>>8982847
I've only ever had plain shiner bock and I'm not a big fan, I understand why most normies like it though it literally tastes like heavily watered down beer which makes it easily chuggable. Are the other extra flavors any different? I plan on trying the strawberry before summers out.
>>
>>8991954
Left Hand Brewing has some fantastic stuff.

>>8982875
Not even remotely a meme, milk stouts tend to be a bit sweeter, or even heavily sweet and more a dessert beer. Hands down one of my favorite milk stouts ever is 8 Maids-A-Milking from The Bruery, I cleared my beer store out of them last year.
>>
>>8991998
>Left Hand Brewing has some fantastic stuff.
I've had nothing from them but their milk stout and nitro milk stout which I've just picked up over the last few weeks but the nitro milk stout is literally perfection it's the perfect blend of beer and black coffee taste, I plan on seeing what else the liquor stores near me have from them soon

Thank Christ they're more creative with their brewing.
>>
>>8991960
Blame the company, not the style; bock is basically lager's older brother, and is usually around 6-7% ABV, and even higher if you're looking at doppelbocks, maibocks and eisbocks. A good one should far and away be much stronger tasting than the average macro.
>>
>>8991276
Yeah it tastes like balsamic beer. I enjoy it.
>>
>>8982146
Purple Haze isn't amazing but it's not terrible. Also if the "Make Your Own Six Pack" section makes you pick from a section of single bottles, chances are they're stale. I've found out most stores do that to get rid of stale beer.
>>
>>8982265
>2018
Thats next december person from the future
>>
>>8992175
On that note, how long does bottled/canned beer take to go stale in ideal storage conditions (i.e. cool temperatures and away from sunlight)? And how does one identify a beer that's beginning to go stale?
>>
>>8992170
So it's a sour ale? That's interesting. I wonder what kinds of food would go well with it?
>>

>>8992200
Yeah but it's a unique kind of sour. I'd assume something like blue cheese, but fuck if I know anything about pairing beer. I usually just eat chicken breast, broccoli, and sweet potato with everything

You can't be serious. They all taste almost the same, with one or other different note in the flavor.

My other point remains true. They are the easiest, simplest to brew and makes people think they know something about beer, while having a generic taste.

They are literally a meme beer.
>>
>>8993509
It's just a tasty session beer. I dig it.
>>8993639
They don't, you just have shit taste m8. I don't care for certain styles but I don't make broad generalizations about them like an idiot.
>>
>>8991954
There's a brewery near me that makes milk stouts, and they are pretty good. Lancaster Brewing Company is the name.
>>
>>8992195
It kinda varies depending on the style. If it's not an IPA and has an ABV of more than 10%, shelf life isn't as big of a deal. In fact, a lot of people age them.

But as a whole most beers have a shelf life of 6-ish months. IPA's are really only good for 2 1/2-3 months. But most breweries these days have some sort of bottling date on the beer.
>>
>>8993639
IPA's are kind of easy to make, but definitely hard to make well.
>>
>>8993861

There's a barrel of Lancaster beer at my work which has blown its keystone and no one seems to give a shit because Lancaster beers are rubbish anyway.

I've tried that stout. Was pretty much just a standard Guinness. Nothing wrong with a smooth taste, but disappointing that it wasn't something more. Maybe it was just that brew?

The mix I'm probably be looking for is the smoothness of that Left Hand Nitro with a thicker tasting body.

Flanders Red ale is a unique and great style but if you got the chance, you should try Rodenbach Grand Cru before Duchesse de Bourgogne. It's more beginner friendly. I drank Duchesse before, but I wish I had found them in the opposite order, it would have helped me appreciate some more let's say 'odd' characteristics of Duchesse more and not believe there was something wrong with the bottle.
>>
>>8982057
how to get over the fact that beer is basically liquid estrogen?

it almost turned me into a wine drinker already
>>
>>8996478
I hear you. I've just tried it, and it's nice in its own way, but NOT something I'd drink regularly. It really felt like I was drinking high-quality balsamic vinegar from a chalice; very sweet and berrylike with a hint of malt, but incredibly sour, to the point my stomach felt like melting wax by the time I finished the bottle. Next time I try this style, I think I'll get some saltine crackers and cheese to take the edge off.
>>
>>8997560
Wine is much worse on that front
>>
>>8998059
Yup. I want to add that I actually found Rodenbach Grand Cru very delicious. Many of the tastes were much more subdued, not least the odd taste (that actually is one of the core characteristics of the style) that is easiest to describe as paint thinner or glue.

There are maybe 5000 breweries in the USA and maybe 10,000 wineries. The market can support breweries, but people should drink more local stuff instead of only chasing beers from states away.

Fresh local will always beat out the competition except for very specific cases.
>>

Three floyds used false scarcity to jack up the prices of their beers. They've recently upped production, but the prices have remained high. It's ridiculous. There are better options, at least in the Chicago area.

Still, it's worth it to visit their brewery. They do have good beers, they just charge way too much for them.

Their Beer Camp this year is fucking spectacular. I'm having the Surly collaboration right now (Lager brewed with ginger and cayenne, fermented on oak)and I couldn't be happier. It's so tasty. Strong taste intensity, akin to what BrewDog do, or at least used to do in the past. I generally like beer like that. >Do I just say give me a beer at bars/restraunt and just drink whatever they give me?
lol

I mean if you tell them you are new to beer and ask for a suggestion, then unless they're real cunts they will probably accommodate you. Or ask whoever you're with what to try. If you just say "I'll have a beer please" you'll most likely get a blank look.

For a total noob probably look for a lager/pilsner with a strength of around 4.5-5.5%.

Been on a craft beer binge for the last few months. I've been trying out the microbreweries where I live, [Vancouver, BC] and I've gotta say that R&B Brewing is my favorite so far. They've got a solid Pale Ale, IPA, Stout and a Cream Ale that's very smooth to drink.

They've got about 6 drinks they sell year round and usually have one or two beers they try out seasonally.

Their 64 growlers are about $11.50 to fill up. That's priced better than a lot of other local places. Right around the corner is 33 Acres and their growlers are $13 or $14, I can't remember.

This is an objectively shit opinion. While there's some bad stuff, there's plenty of decent beers posted in here.
>>
>>9012593
don't tell me you actually paid full price for rare

Why do you faggots have to get into pissing contests over what beer you drink? Like who gives a shit if you drink a limited release bourbon barrel aged beer? Acting like your somehow a superior human being based on the beer you drink is the gayest shit ever.
>>
>>9012593
I had Goose Islands Bourbon County Grand Prestige yesterday (a belgian quad aged in barrels)

Pretty good, but this is still my favorite BA quad

I am a beer enthusiast and aspiring brewer. I’ve been drinking craft beer for well over 10 years. I have grown to love all types of beer. My favorite type is bourbon barrel aged stout, the delicious yumminess from an abundance of malt never fails to amaze me. I’m always willing to try something new.

This is pure sugar, look up the nutrition content. I used to like it until I realized it's literally mostly lemonade

I'm liking some of the new fruit sours from the Midwest though

Toppling Goliath;'s barrel aged special release stuff is absurdly priced, but they do make the best pale ales and IPAs in the country at pretty normal prices.
This is probably the best PA/IPA I have tried and I paid like $7 for a bomber
>>
>>9015918
Their regular offerings are reasonably priced and phenomenal. This includes all the bombers I've ever seen from them. They've all been under 10$
>>
>>8982057
I've got a simple saison happening in the basement - pils malt, a touch of chocolate malt for shits and giggles, australian yeast and a bit of EKG.

Drinking chilled gnat's piss... I mean Canadian Macro Lager.

I've literally never been disappointed by a Toppling Goliath bomber. They are one of a small handful of breweries that I will buy a new beer I see from them at the store without question

Daily reminder: In the mid 19th century there were more than 4000 microbreweries across the US. Just because you accepted the feminized macro adjuncts developed during WWII when only the weak males and women who couldn't fight and accepted a weak imitation of beer, don't expect everyone else to. We drink craft beer, the beer that built this fucking country.

I really enjoyed Lindeman's Framboise. It was almost like drinking carbonated raspberry juice.

How's Ommegang's Rosetta in comparison? A little more bitter?
>>
>>9017710

What do you expect of IPA fags? They keep buying a beer that tastes literally the same, no matter which brand.

But at least they have some hip branding and cool names, am I rite?
>>
>>9018407
probably too late, but Weihenstephaner is great, and probably /ck/ approved.

Most wheats/weizen have that Belgian yeast flavour, sometimes amplified with the addition of orange peel, coriander, and/or clove. Some breweries go right off the rails with things like Schwarzweizen which is more like a slightly tangy, creamy stout/porter most often.

>>9018846
I've spent time on this... sad but true.

It's possible to use different hops to make a bitter beer in an IPA fashion that doesn't taste like Cascade cascade failure. It's completely possible to avoid Cascade, Citra, Columbus, and Simcoe. There are flavours out there that aren't as citrusy or piney, and some will deliver quite a bitter zing with almost a pineapple/passionfruit note, or even a clove/cinnamon thing.

Why does almost every specialty Sam Adams brew taste like it's been diluted with generic lager? Whenever I pick up one of their variety packs, the hefeweizen or shandy or whatever often tastes more watery and bitter than I would expect from the style.

"Sessionable" beers, especially IPAs, and especially especially dry-hopped IPAs are in right now... I've always been of the opinion that if I want to drink more beers, I just drink more beers, but apparently that's detrimental to functionality.

Any thoughts on the Sierra Nevada variety pack?
I had the Black IPA, Peach IPA and German IPA tonight. The Black IPA was really good. Intense hops with a roasted burnt barley flavor. It was easily a 10/10 beer. Also had the classic Lagunitas. Good way to make up for not getting a job I interviewed for last week. cunt.

Depends where you're at?

On Fleek stout is 13%, and delicious.

Simtra from Knee Deep Brewing is like 12.75%, triple IPA.

Belgian strong ales are great, any double IPA is likely 8%+, any not-shit stout is over 8%, I've had a few killer red ales north of 7%, Trappist ales are high % and some of the best beers in the world.

Dogfish Head has a raisin ale that's 18%, their 120 minute IPA is 17%, and there's some meme beers brewed solely to be 20-60% alcohol if you can afford and find them.

If you're just wanting to get fucked up, just get some 75 or 95% everclear and mix it with whatever.
>>
>>9026022

Aside from the current session vogue, it's weird to me that anyone thinks 8% is something abnormally high. Pretty much everything I drink is in the 7-11 range. Also, if you just want to get drunk on the cheap there are definitely low-mid range vodkas out there that are Far more palatable than trying to mix everclear.
>>
>>9026022
He was after price/strength, quality of beer doesn't come into it.
