You don't really understand how Americans view heritage, then. I'll give you an example. My grandfather's grandfather came here from Germany, but my grandfather didn't grow up speaking German at all. He tried learning it later in life for a trip there, but that's it, he views himself as American, not German. It's very uncommon for immigrants to America from Europe to maintain too many of their traditions, especially their heritage languages. All my family really does which is still German-like is we bake and decorate cookies around Christmas time that contain anise (licorice flavoring).

We don't have any awareness of being German because there are other relatives in the mixture who came from England and possibly other countries. There are plenty of branches of my family tree whom I have NO IDEA where they came from. For example, all I know about my grandfather's grandmother (the one who married the German immigrant) is that she was very poor and was living in a cabin in the Ozarks (region in USA) before marrying him. You may be aware of websites like 23andme.com, but try actually watching some of the promo videos for it. Americans do these kinds of genetic tests because we are genuinely curious to learn about our racial backgrounds. We really don't know where all our ancestors came from.

Hmmm, well things are different for different groups of people. My German ancestors migrated here in the 1840s, and the entire community continued to speak German well into the late 20th century. My dad didn't learn to speak English till he went to school in the 1940s, and when I was growing up in the 1980s, all the adults still spoke German to each other. So, while my spoken German isn't very good, I can read it pretty well, and I can understand it when it's spoken around me. Another strange thing is that the German spoken in my hometown is like old German, because it never evolved once they immigrated here, so to modern Germans that visit, people in our town sound archaic and strange. There have been linguistic experts who've come and documented the German spoken, since it's considered a very specific dialect.
But, everyone in town has always considered themselves American first, my ancestors were the only people to make a true and lasting peace treaty with the Comanche tribes, nearly half the damn town fought in WWI and WWII (I lost several great uncles to those wars), my dad was in the Army during the Korean war (although he ended up stationed in Europe). Both my parents still speak German regularly, even though they were both born here, long after their ancestors came, and still keep up LOTS of German tradition, as does pretty much the whole town (although it's changing now that the town has grown so much with people moving in from all over), but they identify as American.
Anyway, culture and heritage isn't as simple in the US as it is in older countries.

You're getting a lopsided view of history, friendo. All the Germans that settled my hometown (and a few other towns in the same state, that came off the same boat) were 80% Lutheran. And, even in my own, town, the German Lutherans and the German Catholics had their own neighborhoods. Even today, if you're a native, you know that the north side of town is Lutheran, and the south side is Catholic.
And since the majority of immigrants to America were German, those conflicts you're talking about were localized and not widespread.
