I'm oversimplifying a bit here, but mezcal is essentially tequila with less stringent criteria. Some that I've had are far more drinkable than something like Jose, although I'm sure some are like a heavily peated scotch with an agave backbeat.

exactly. You can make blue agave mezcal with a light char, that would be tequila if it were made in Jalisco, but because it's Oaxacan, it's mezcal.

My sort of on-again-off-again slampig brought some smoked maguey / lightly roasted blue agave rocket fuel from her family's farm... very full flavoured, not something I'd want to drink a lot of, or have more than a sip at a time.

Are you seventy? There was a huge "artisanal" tequila fad from maybe late 90s through early 00s, it's not cool anymore (because mezcal now) but you sound like you're living in the pre-tequila-boom years.
