You can generally get fresh sardines or smelts (?) Gonna good fishmonger, they are supposed to he dope fried whole, or fried fileted ,with just some salt and pepper. One of the malt Mario episodes up on YouTube has them.

Mind you, they are still a small oily fish, so if you don't like the small oily fish-ness of ot, you still won't like em.

Don't anchovies and sardines come from the same fish?

I used to think sardines, but my local fishmonger takes fresh sardines and then launches them in oil and garlic and it is heavenly shit. 10/10 would recommend.

anchovies on pizza and in puttanesca is fine though

They're two completely different things. Sardines are a snack, anchovies are something you add to food to make it taste fishy+salty.
