I thought the Galas were good this year, but for several years past, they were trash. Sadly, you can't tell without tasting them. It varies from year to year. Also depends on how long they've been in cold storage. You just have to buy some different varieties every once in a while to see if they're good. Such is fruit.

Apples have consistently gone down in quality for the last two hundred years. We have bred out complexity, subtlety, fuller flavors etc in exchange for a bland uniform sweetness. Ever notice how there's only really like six or seven kind of apples really and one's really only for baking?

All Red Delicious are shit. Honeycrisp is probably closest to the kind of variety in taste that used to exist before large scale corporate agriculture took over.
