I visited Philly a couple of times a few years ago and I had cheesesteaks from Sonny's and Campo's. They were pretty good, but they were pretty expensive for what they were. Can any Philly anons recommend me a good cheesesteak that's near Rittenhouse or Center City or at least close to the train station? I would be usually coming in by train from NYC if I visit again. I'm pretty open and confident with the idea of using the local transit too, if it means taking me to good places to eat/sightsee.

I'm an urban planner/architect here, so I enjoy walking around and seeing interesting neighborhoods and local food/restaurant culture.

Jim's is the best of the big ones by far IMO, with John's Roast Pork is pretty good too, even if the sesame roll is unconventional.

Honestly though, I lived in Philly for college, which should have been pretty much prime time for cheesesteak enjoyment, but I just don't think it's that great a sandwich.

They're called subs. Best topping combo for a standard large sub is pickles, white onion, fried onion, chicken skin, garlic oil, chili and bacon, mustard and ketchup.

John's Roast Pork is the best cheesesteak you can get in the city. Put Extra sharp provolone and fried onions and it's a gangbang of flavor in your mouth.
