Putting aside all the New Age-y puffing, this works as a VERY simplified metaphor for epigenetics. What we put into our bodies does have an appreciable effect on how our genes and even those of our offspring are expressed, either via promotion or silencing (methylation is one way this happens).

If you ever wondered why children of famine survivors (e.g. the Dutch famine) often end up diabetic or overweight, epigenetics provides answers.
