They're the landlubber version of clams. Like prehistoric man was BBQ'ing snails or shellfish since the dawn of man. From a canned aspect, they don't get "fishy" or gross like other canned meats.

To me, they were always froufrou food, like just a known fancy appetizer. I have had them since a kid. To me, they taste like mushrooms.
