kats or katz was the one my tourist ass went to and it was great. I'm not technically from NYC but ff it means anything my family is made up of jews from manhattan/jersey (depends what side of the family) and I've had this deli recommended to me plenty of times

yeah the pastrami is the obligatory thing there, don't bother with salami that's ridiculous

for white clam chowder try the oyster bar at GCT, there are a lot of other places with good clam chowder but you're a tourist and it's part of NY history (and also good food). people generally say "new england clam chowder" here but people will know what you mean

Places dont get famous for being shitty. You should visit famous places. In fact I hate when people come in and promote their obscure hole in the wall joint they grew up around, toting it as a hidden gem. If a place has good food, it would be known for it. A New Yorker would also recommend the same famous places because they're objectively the best.

Katz's is a tourist trap, but it's for a good reason. New Yorkers will recommend it just as much. I liked Schwartz's in Montreal much more though, anyways.

Maybe they don't get famous from being shitty but they might get shitty from being famous. A lot of places skimp on quantity/quality and raise the prices once they know they can rely on notoriety for business.
