By running a can of whole tomato through a food mill and adding it to a pot with sauteed aromatics like onion and garlic.
make a roux and add ketchup

First of all, tomato seeds are bitter and should always be removed. Secondly, how is a food mill a unitasker?
things I use a food mill for:
>tomato sauce
>mashed potatoes(not every time, because sometimes I like the skins, depending on the potato and how I want the dish to look)
>applesauce
>spaetzle
>getting the most flavor into a smooth sauce or soup
And there are other uses for it, of course, but that's how I use it. Sure, it doesn't get used as often as a knife or a pan, but it's easier to use it than to run something through a blender or food processor and then run it through a sieve, dirtying way more shit in the process. Plus, I like using it. It's fun.

>tomato seeds are bitter
I've heard that but have never detected it. I'm glad you reminded me about that though because when we have the food myths threads, I'm definitely including that old wives tale.
