Mezcal uses a different type of agave than the Blue Weber agave used in tequila. It is also processed differently. Instead of the agave fruit being roasted in an oven, it is smoked in earthen pits before being pulverized and fermented.

It's similar to tequila in a lot of respects, but it has a unique earthy, smoky, almost medicinal quality to it.

Meme-tier mezcal comes with an agave worm. It's actually a beetle larva, but they call it a worm.The worm offers no flavor or hallucinogenic properties, it's just a dead pest.

Protip: Any time you drink or buy tequila, look for a bottle that says "100% De Agave" clearly on the front label of the bottle.

Any tequila that doesn't say this is 51% actual tequila and 49% neutral grain spirit with color added.

Any recommendations for mezcal? I want to try one with a decent smokey aspect but I would like to keep it under 40 for a bottle if possible. Does it come in aged and white versions like tequila?

Yes, but joven (young) mezcal typically still has 3-6 months of barrel time.
