The meme here has always been that starfruit is the most disappointing fruit. I pretty much agree. It's nearly flavorless, unless it isn't ripe in which case it has a cloying "green" taste to it that won't go away for hours no matter what you do.

Mainly Asia, Brazil, and Spain. Popular in South America apparently (and southern Europe, was easy to find them when I was there).

In the NYC metro area the season is short and they're all imported. You can find them in Chinatown and in the Portuguese groceries around Newark. They generally don't make it to the regular supermarkets here though.
