do a pork shoulder first. You will get some practice regulating temperature. Also a dual temp remote thermometer will make your life easier.

Do a couple of cheap meals before spending $50 on a brisket.

This is the best advice. I'd throw on some spare ribs too since they are cheap. It'll also teach you how to break them down into St Louis style ribs. But remember your first couple of cooks are going to run hot because it's new and it won't run cooler until the soot builds up around the shiny parts of the cooker.
