Is it possible to get strong coffee from a modern percolator? Was it ever possible in old fashioned ones? What happened?

That's not percolator though.
Modern? I don't understand, why not just use a standard percolator? All it is is bubbling water over coffee grounds.
I tried the french press, but I didn't like the coffee, my percolator is better, makes tastier coffee. I find the coffee is stronger when I bring the water to percolation temp slower, it lets the coffee get moist before the water start running over it. If you want it stronger you could perc it longer, or just add more grounds.
You can see the basket for coffee is pretty large, versus the amount of water you would add. You have to keep the water maybe like 1/4 - 1/2 inch from the bottom of the basket.
Percolation by its very design is a weak brew.
Get a press or a moka pot if you want strong coffee.

They double as a kettle and you can make big pots fast with a percolator, plus the coffee has a distinct flavor compared to other forms of brewing that some people prefer.

you literally extract more flavour

french press is the easiest to make strongest besides a proper espresso, just add more grinds and it's more strong.
