It isn't just hicks. Walk into a regular supermarket even in a major metropolitan area and most of what they're selling is shit. If you want good stuff you pretty much have to go to a specialty store because overall American standards are pretty low. Those low standards keep our food cheap, though. And that's part of where we get the reputation for unhealthy food - standard issue meat and dairy products are so cheap we can just pile them on with abandon. That tendency to use low to mediocre quality ingredients and just supersize everything is common here. And we do have a reputation for doing it.

Depends on the man. Most guys I know in the wine business rarely drink beer. Most guys I know from France, Spain and Italy are happy to drink a beer but usually switch over to wine with their meals. I think it has to do with whether you grew up in a tradition where wine is served at the table. If you did you will probably choose wine over beer with most meals.
