Umami is direct stimulation of glutamate receptors, i.e. it is its own basic taste.

It doesn't help that umami is a portmanteau of umai (うまい: delicious; tasty) and mi (味: flavor, taste), which is fairly vague in Japanese, and other languages.

You instantly know the exact flavors brought to mind when you hear salty, sweet, bitter, and sour. But "tasty" or "delicious" is extremely broad, and evokes different thoughts for different people.

It's just a retarded subset of savory.

Umami is Japan's interpretation of savory.

The main difference being they view it in more existential reference whereas western culture sees it as more empirical.
