Why are drinks usually either bland or sweet, especially when you disregard alcoholic drinks (because then you're drinking for the alcohol first, taste is secondary). Compared to the wide variety of tastes in food, whether it's sweet, salty, spicy, bitter, greasy, etc. there isn't nearly as much variation when it comes to the taste of drinks. And as for sweet foods, they're mostly relegated to dessert instead of the main dish, even though what you drink can be sweet. Why is this?

I just looked up "coke cake" in google but damn
So any ideas on this sweet food vs sweet drinks idea, guys?
savory liquids usually do not taste good unless hot.
coffee and teas can come in flavors not sweet.
I think most people associate savory liquids with body fluids.
That said, there are some niche non-sweet beverages, like Clamato, wheatgrass juice, and pickle juice, and then there are the wildly popular bitter beverages, like coffee and tea.
Sweet beverages being acceptable as an accompaniment to the main meal while desserts aren't... hard to say? Probably cultural. Perhaps based on the traditional scarcity of pure sugar but comparable bounties of fruit to make juice from. Even chocolate was originally prepared as a bitter beverage with chili.

But it's like
>drink this fruit as a liquid and it goes with your meal
>eat this fruit as a solid and it goes after your meal
Of course there are exceptions, like putting apples in your salad (or the more controversial pineapples on your pizza) but this seems like the norm, and it feels weirdly arbitrary when you think about it.

There's a reason cardio is listed last after "cookies" and "cupcakes".

Even if you don't, even though beer is bitter, cider isn't, many cocktails aren't, etc.
