Got a variety pack from these guys because it was on sale. All of these are great, but the lager seems like a lacking version of their pils desu. Not sure why it's there. Not bad, but extremely forgettable with the better option available at all times.

Just turned 21. Where the fuck do I start? I was so excited to go to the beer store, but I had no idea what the hell to get. I got a bottle of raspberry lambic and some random stout. What's a good stout or lambic? I'll try anything, as long as it's not a super-duper strong stout. I know the ABV in those can get pretty high.

how do i know when too much is too much?

i have OCD so thats why im asking. tonight, i have had three beers, at 8.7% alcohol, about over a 3 hour period. is it safe to have more? i just dont want to a) permanently effect my memory or perception or b) cause permanently health damage
>>
>>8589339
You're fine. Have 2 more
>>
>>8589369

Thanks man. I'm always just paranoid that I'm going to destroy my brain, or my perception. I know that sounds retarded but I literally have OCD, and every action I take seems significant.

Im always just so worried. Drinking is the only thing that helps me relax. As long as it doesn't permeantly effect my brain I am willing to take part. I just want to have fun like everyone else.
>>
>>8589339
Dude, don't worry about it. There's nothing to suggest that alcohol in and of itself causes permanent effects to memory or perception. I mean, your other organs, sure, but not your brain.
>>
Drinking Voodoo Ranger IIPA
Pretty good stuff, nicely balanced, drinkable and definitely doesn't taste like it's 9%
Decently cheap too
>>
>>8589339
The general consensus in the scientific community is that 14 servings of alcohol per week over a long period of time has the potential to cause damage to your liver. One serving = a 1.5oz shot, a 12 oz 5% beer, 5oz glass of wine, etc...

This is just a broad rule of thumb. Obviously it depends on things like genetics and if you're using any other substances which can potentiate the harmful effects on the liver.

But it's not going to fuck with your memory or perception in the long term. There is no evidence that really suggests that other than intense mental decline for prolonged extreme abuse
>>
>>8589339
Any amount of alcohol greatly increases your risk of some cancers, as far as I know it doesn't make you dumber until 30th+ drinks/week though
>>
>>8589339
Certain populations have elevated cancer risk, for example Asians have significantly elevated esophageal cancer risk.

I feel like it messes with my memory and face recognition but that might just be lack of sleep.

As someone who was raised by recovering alcoholics:

I understand your fear. I too have had this fear. But only you know when you've had enough. It's all about what you yourself feel comfortable with. Some people can have one beer and be done with it. I don't usually drink more than one or two beers a night. It's okay to drink more, and it's okay to drink less. Just do what you're comfortable with. Don't let other people tell you how to drink.

If you're really worried, just stop and think every once in a while about how much you're drinking, and how often. It never helps to think about things. If you're getting blackout drunk on a regular basis, then it's probably time to take a serious look at your life. If you're just getting tipsy every once in a while, you're probably okay.

Sorry if I'm rambling; I'm drunk right now. I got a new job and I'm celebrating my better pay and less-shitty work environment with beers and whiskey.
>>
>>8595524
I find that Furious is far, far better on tap than it is from a can. Maybe that has something to do with it. But I just like that super-hoppy taste, especially paired with salty foods.
>>
>>8589384
>Drinking is the only thing that helps me relax.

Are you on Lexapro (escitalopram)?

I'm on it for depression, but I find it's also helps with my OCD tendencies. And it's not addictive. I don't believe it's approved to treat OCD, but it's certainly helped me. Ask your doctor about it. It's not good to be self-medicating. Plus, since it's gone generic, it's cheaper than booze.

I don't mean to sound like a drug peddler, but it seriously changed my life.

Get to know the styles, and what makes flavor, and you'll start to zero in on your tastes.

Try something balanced (English Style Bitter, Amber Ale), something malty (Stout, Porter), something hoppy (Pale Ale, India Pale Ale), and see what you like most. Try a wheat bear (Hefeweizen, Witbier), and an abbey style (Dubbel, Tripel), and a sour. Try a crisp lager (Pilsner, Pale Lager).

Somewhere in there, you should like something, and you can go after the styles that are similar, and get to know which breweries have the manufacturing and ingredients that hit your buttons.

It's not bad or anything, but I think it's literally the least impressive RIS I've ever had. That list is not short, and I've given Old Rasputin multiple shots. It just isn't great, yet it's got such a reputation.

Chocolate and Espresso Oak Aged Yeti are probably my favorites that are easy to find.

Stone Xocoveza and Prairie Bomb! are also great.

If you're in Florida, Marshall Zhukov's and I'm So Excited I'm So Scared are currently out. The latter is probably the best coffee IS I've had, and the former is one of the best period.

Best I've ever had -- and probably the best beer I've had period -- is Hunahpu's, but I don't know if you're just asking because you're curious, or if you want recommendations.

If you're looking for recommendations, Abita's Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout is kind of widely distributed. Left Hand's Wake Up Dead -- and its inferior-but-good nitro version -- Bell's Expedition Stout, and Founder's Imperial Stout are wide spread and quality.

What do you usually eat while drinking a darker beer? I want to like it but I just don't, maybe the right food pairing will do it for me
>>
>>8600349
Darker beer has a wiiiiiiiiiide variety of flavor profiles. Even calling beer "darker" shows ignorance and is pretty bitch mode. Coloration in beer comes from alot of dofferent things, but most beers gather the bulk of their color from the graons used. The beers you list are VERY different from each other which makes me think bitterness is a flavor you arent deeling well with. Thats were the "name a real beer characteristic you are struggling with" thing comes from. Start with stouts and porters, which derive the bitterness from burnt grains and not from hops and work your way into the ipas. You should be able to blend the dryness with either a nice starchy meal or compare it with bitter chocolate. Once you acclimate to bitterness you can wrap your head around ipas.
>>
>>8600386
This years and last arent knocking my socks off but w/e double ipas arent what im craving atm. Normaly the honey is more noticeable than this years incase you think im just being picky to be le coool

Blowoffs are normal, just sanitise properly. Also, you might want to stop using dextrose or any other type of sugar in brewing, it gives it a really bad, stereotypical homebrew taste. Better to use a can of unflavored malt extract, really makes a difference.
Other things to keep in mind are sanitation, temperature control, and sanitation.

Even if it's a bit far for you, I would recommend checking out The Bruery, Noble Ale Works, Bottle Logic, and Valiant out in the OC. LA has Mumford, Claremont Craft, Highland Park, El Segundo, Smog City, and Golden Road (Say what you will about the sell out, their actual brewpubs are nice places to eat and grab a few pints). There's like a gorillion breweries in San Diego. There's a few out in Tememcula too. Garage, Ironfire, and Electric are out that way and they make solid stuff.
