Italian here too. I make the sin of breaking spaghetti for the mere reason that they wouldn't otherwise fit into the teeny tiny pot I regularly use for boiling the water when I prepare my lunch.

Oh, and another thing, most of her cooking was large batches of food that we can microwave at a later date. So she never made just spaghetti for 3 for one night, she usually put in a whole package, we ate what we wanted that night, and saved the rest to eat over the week. Not sure if that affects it.

It's more easily packaged in straight dry noodles, so breaking it allows you to fit it in all at once so they cook at the same time.

question for the Italians here: do any of you cut your spaghetti up into little pieces after it's been cooked? My mother used to do that because my brother was borderline retarded. I hated it, thought it ruined it; but she did both of ours anyway despite my annoyance until he figured out how to eat it properly.
