A cleaver is a knife. A war cleaver, hardened for murderin', is a sword.
Obviosly it's a cleaver, but as far as the working principle (center of gravity far forward of the handle, works by swinging/buildup of kinetic energy and use of momentum) is concerned there is little difference between a cleaver and an axe. A cleaver is basically just an axe with a very wide blade.
