Why do cocktails have such a bad reputation for being sugary fruity girly shit?
I tried an Old Fashioned recently and it was everything I dreamt it would be. A sexed up scotch on the rocks, lightly citrusy.
But I feel pretentious just for ordering it, and when you google cocktails you get shit like this instead.

I only asked for an "old fashioned", and all I know is he used whisky not brandy.
I just assumed it was scotch because it's the go-to whisky in the UK.

Not sure, but I think shit like Tipsy Bartender has changed peoples perception of what a cocktail is. When a young person thinks cocktail, they don't think Old Fashioned, they think of shit like fishbowls filled with dried ice, 10 different liquors with rock candy sticking out of it, or something like in your pic. I feel bad for the bartenders that have to deal with kids trying to order some dumb shit they saw on the internet.

also those layered drinks always seemed nasty to me. either drink it like that which sucks or mix it up and it turns into some purplish brown concoction.
