My dog has never eaten anything other than human food. My family mainly feeds him bread, leftover yogurt, and cereal.

We gave him a hot dog once and he got very sick because he swallowed it whole so we don't do that anymore.

I really don't like how little protein my family feeds him so I usually sneak in late at night and load him up on cottage cheese or scrambled eggs. Poor dog. I feed my dog better food after she has diarrhea (fast for 24 h then feed mixture of cottage cheese, boiled lean beef, and white rice and incorporate it with her normal food over a few day period).

You don't *have* to feed them dog food, but you should at least give them a healthy and varied diet. Giving them grains and yogurt is brutal. The fact that he is overweight is also telling too.

My dog eats like a king and is in phenomenal health. She is an athlete and we hunt, skijor, canoe, and hike together lots. I couldn't imagine her skijoring 20 km or sprinting in the deep snow for 3 hours and coming home to fucking cheerios and bread.

We have 21 cats and a dog. My dog eats high protein grain free dog food and sometimes I will mix left over meats or rice in with it as more of a treat for him. The 21 cats all live outside and come from the woods and have taken over the yard and porch and won't leave and keep mating with each other and having more. They aren't mine and animal places won't come remove them. They eat everything and anything they can. Once I walked out and there was a fresh leg of a chicken on the porch and one feather and that was it. Dunno where the rest of the chicken went. Like I mean a fresh chicken foot that is yellow with claws attached.

One of my dogs used to really like Takis. She won't eat them anymore though.

When I was a kid and a picky eater, I had a dog that would eat all the vegetables I didn't want in my Chinese food: bamboo, bell peppers and onions, absolutely anything. Fattest dog I ever had. Ate one of her own puppies, probably just because she had a hankering.

Not all, but many dogs will walk all over you if you let them. When I first got my dog, he was super obedient and responded to commands like he should. My family has consistently fed him whatever he wants and let him behave however he wants and now he growls when we ask him to do something he doesn't want to do (like move from a certain spot, or go outside to piss).

I don't know if he would actually bite me but I have provoked him enough a few times by asking him to move that he has opened his mouth and put it on my hand lightly.

My grandfather had a dog that ran into issues with obedience. He beat the shit out of him one day with a big stick and the dog never stepped out of line again. And if it did, all my grandfather had to do was pick up the stick and the dog immediately surrendered.

The black lab my family had when I was growing up had a big thing for processed American cheese slices.

She was a real little shit who liked to dig under the backyard fence when no one was looking and go exploring the neighborhood. By exploring I mean shitting in as many of the neighbors yards as possible. Often times she would just refuse to come back. So I would grab a slice of shitty Wal-Mart cheese, chase after her for 2 miles (she really did wander that far), and as soon as she saw that cheese she would follow me right back into the house without protest.

Long before we put her down, she survived being accidentally run over by my mom's mini-van in the driveway which left her with a cracked skull and broken ribs. A year or so after that she managed to get outside very early in the morning, got ran over by a fucking snow plow, presumably pushed down the road by it, then crawled under a neighbors car in a half foot of snow to die. I found her myself (I was 12), dug her out with my bare hands, wrapped her in a blanket, and got her to an emergency vet service. She had hypothermia, many broken bones, internal bleeding, and a punctured lung.

She survived all that shit, but it was arthritis that did her in. What a tough bitch. I miss that dog.

Cacao is what is poisonous to the dog, and depending on how much is in the chocolate (60% versus something like a 90% bar), and how much the dog weighs (a ten pound dog versus an eighty), then you will see the effects. Most dogs can handle regular chocolate because it has very little cacao in it, and they would need to consume close to their own weight in it to end up in the hospital if they aren't already sensitive to it. If it's very dark chocolate, and it's a small dog that eats a whole fucking bar, then ya, dogs probably gonna have some fucking problems.

It's a bit more nuanced than that. It has nothing to do with the digestive system. They are deficient in a particular enzyme responsible for metabolizing theobromine. They have *some* of it, just not the same amount humans do when scaled, so they are perfectly capable of eating dark chocolate..they just can't have a lot.
