Was planning on getting a mug with a brewing basket. Thinking about this one (http://verdanttea.com/teas/samadoyo-personal-glass-brew-cup/) unless anyone can recommend something better quality and/or better value.
>>
>>8412958
I would get something like that but I feel like making a mugful of quality tea would be wasting it. I use the gaiwan mainly
>>
>>8413109
Is it really all the different if you use the same leaves/water ratio and steep time? I can't see how removing the basket and drinking it would have a significant loss in quality compared to pouring into another container and drinking it when all other factors are the same.
>select all images with tea
And of course none of them are tea. One isn't even a drink, it's a bunch of cakes.
>>
>>8413127
No I mean I'd be making a mugful and using more leaves, I feel like making small amounts with a gaiwan is more appropriate for teas with delicate and complex flavors
>>
These guys get it.

>>
>>8413138
Alright, I can see that. I think while I was looking around I saw some smaller mugs closer to 100ml that might be more up your alley if you do want to consider one. I wasn't after those because I'm looking for something for general drinking with meals, while working, or doing other things. When I want to drink tea for the sake of drinking tea rather than because I want to something to drink and prefer tea I wouldn't use it.
>>
>>8413146

>>8413151
I should definitely look into it, sounds convenient

My mum gave me a little tea guy for Christmas. It'll only really work with tea leaves, not bags. What are some cheaper tea leaves I can look for? When I was looking before they were all really expensive.

Tea drinking is one of the gayest things ever. Drinking lightly flavored water and being a pretentious faggot about it. Why? To top it all off the more flavourful variants also contain very high doses of brain-damaging and cancer causing toxic halogens. Fucking trendy faggots giving yourself brittle bones.
>>

My stepdad brought me some nicely packaged tea from china. I don't drink hot beverages very often though. It looks like similar to my image. Will it stay fresh for a few months if the package is opened?
>>
>>8413387
Halogens are great leaving groups, just drink something that will be nicer, like oxygen or nitrogen in some sort of amine or something. Not dat dere carbon though, that gives cancer.
>>
>>8413641
Yes, just limit the amount of oxygen and light it's exposed too. For example, place in a zip lock bag with air squeezed out and put in a tin.
>>
>>8413497
>>8413615
>>8413632
Tea has large amounts of sodium flouride in it. If you wanted to detoxify the ground of flouride you would use tea plants to do it, they suck it up like sponges. Black tea is the worst, green tea is a little bit better, and white tea has the least amount of it.

Poisoned american tap water contains 0.7 ppm sodium flouride, even that is bad enough. The average tea has about 5 ppm. If we look at cheap black teas, you can even get hundreds of ppm. Note that there is no daily requirement for fluoride (especially not sodium flouride), any amount of it is bad, and it deposits into your bones and is accumalative.

>>
>>8413646

Alright thank you.
>>
>>8413669
We should ask ourselves if the fluoride in tap water is 100% identical to the fluoride grown in nature. I have a hard time believing man made synthetic fluoride is the same in tea plants.
>>
>>8413941
It's not, but neither is the flouride found in teaplants. There is a lot of industrial flouride pollution in china, that the tea plants suck up.
>>
>>8413669
Who gives a shit tho? You don't give a shit when it comes to every other thing you consume so why do you care so much when it comes to tea? Just like those guys only eating fast food then complaining about pesticides in tomatoes.
>>
>>8414013
I do though. Besides flouride is especially bad as it literally causes brain damage and cancer. But if you want a balanced approach you would just stop drinking black tea, green tea and white tea are not so bad in comparison.

>Tea drinking is one of the gayest things ever. Drinking lightly flavored water and being a pretentious faggot about it.

Is it any different than wine connoisseurs or beer drinkers? Or even someone who loves studying on high quality cigars? It's all about focus with these beverage hobbies, people have a fascination with putting their taste buds through a challenge.

How often do you find pretentious tea drinkers in life? Do you see them while walking the mall or hanging out with friends? Chances are you don't, you just see it on the internet and it annoys you. Passionate tea drinkers are generally very shy about it because they know people like you exist to ruin our day.
>>
>>8414030
The pros seem to outweigh the cons for tea health. Thousands of studies proven that tea is indeed very beneficial, however it seems it does have a dark side like most things in life. I suppose the best we can do is not consume a half gallon a day and ensure it comes from a good source in the world.

What is /tea/'s opinion on Genmaicha, or on adding toasted rice to your tea?

I got a sampler tea gift set for Christmas and just tried the stuff for the first time. I'm in love with it already. The blend I got had too high of a ratio of rice to tea, so I mixed some other green with it to balance it out. With just a touch of honey and it was great.

Tea noob here. When I drink green tea it makes me feel nauseous afterards, that extends for an hour or so. I really want to drink it more often but I feel awful later. What am I doing wrong here? ps I don't boil the water.
>>
>>8419791
you may be using too much tea, or you may be steeping it for too much time
depending on the brewing method you're using, you might have to either steep some 3g of tea per 300ml of 80-85 °C water for some 2 minutes, or you might have to steep some 8-10g of tea per 150-200ml of 80-85 °C water for a minute or so
if that still gives you problem, than you're either using a poisonous tea or you're allergic (not literally) to green tea

You have to have a retail tax number though, but that's pretty easy and cheap to set up. The case has 30 bags of damn high quality sencha (my wife is japanese and really picky about her green tea). >How often do you find pretentious tea drinkers in life?

Way too often. My adopted cousin owns a Sushi restaurant and the hipsters that flock there sicken me.

The worst part is that all the Women hipsters always request Lemon in their tea because it, "reduces the number of calories in the tea."

When I'm helping her out on weekends the place is flooded with these people just sipping different tea assortments while eating California rolls. They don't even drink the tea either, they have to let everyone in a 5 block fucking radius know.

First they take a fucking selfie of the cup near their mouth, EVERY TIME.

Then they slurp it taking in more air than liquid, all while making a annoying SLSPSPSLSPSLP noise that's mixed with a GRLGLRGL.

Then they always swish it around in their mouths as if to "activate" its true flavor.

That is really disappointing to here and honestly kinda saddens me.

Their hipster shallowness has both pros and cons depending on how you look at it. On one hand they're making up a fake facade of "i'm different look at me" vibe, but on the other hand they're unintentionally making more mainstream which is good for the industry. I guess the most we can hope for are hipsters bringing back the old authentic ways of tea brewing to the mainstream audience.

I've tried some cheap Kenyan black. It was drinkable. If you've got a few bucks go for it, I didn't regret it.

I kind of appreciate hipsters when it comes to food and cooking. They tend to create a demand for high quality standards and bring a supply of new and often better products to those businesses who are aware and act on that demand. On the other hand they do fuck up some things like every day items becoming suddenly expensive solely from being a hipster fad. Its a tricky situation.
>>
>>8422953
There's also different variants of hipsters. Some are punkish with outlandish behavior, others are more geeky. Some are hippyish, and you might even come across ones that appear quite normal until a strange hobby is reveals itself.

I'm looking to buy some matcha, what's a good price/weight benchmark for it? I've got pretty dull tastebuds so it doesn't have to be great, recommendations are also welcome.

How was it different?

So i'm contemplating whether or not I should buy an electric tea kettle... or a portable electric burner to heat up my iron kettle.

Which would use less energy?
>>
>>8424153
The electric kettle. If you want to use the iron kettle you could get an induction cooker which should be pretty fast.
>>
>>8423723
I buy mostly from hibiki-an, fucking excellent store. http://www.hibiki-an.com/index.php/cPath/26
>>
>>8424153
Yes, buy an induction cooktop. it will turn every one of your pots in an electric teakettle and is super versatile for other stuff besides.

This blog has a lot of matcha reviews

What are your steeping today, lads? I'm brewing w2t's bang dong hong. First time using a yixing pot.

I ordered mine at the end of November. Shipping from China just takes a while. If you're in the states, yours should come in a week or so.

Just got some tiny 50ml gaiwans from ys, compared a sheng from a local store to a ys one, pretty sure the local one dried out and died, super watery, probably not the best material to start with as it was pretty cheap but the store should really store it better

cant use cast iron on induction
>>
I've been drinking sencha and genmaicha for a few months now and I want to upgrade to slightly more expensive tea.

What to get? Gyokuro?

Also, where to start with chinese tea?
>>
>>8425197
wait for the new harvest and get some shincha, the difference is really big to older sencha
>>
>>8425018

lol, what? Cast iron works perfectly fine on induction. Any ferrous metal does.
>>
>>8425328
Damn, does it make that big of a difference? I recently ordered some more sencha and that would explain why this had a notably less sweet flavour
>>
>>8423723
I suppose I was being a little exaggerating when I said it made all the difference. That's just where the quality difference was. It made matcha fine, but the bamboo spoon had splinters that continued to peel back within the first few weeks of owning it, and the fingers of the whisk started to separate and spread apart within the first use, and it only continued to lose shape and firmness/springiness with each additional use. I bought a Japanese whisk and spoon which were much better quality, despite being only slightly more expensive, and the whisk has maintained shape much better.

What's the most aesthetic tea container? Looking at Amazon I find stuff like this - it'd work, sure, but it feels kinda sterile and un-comfy to me.

Is the best option just to look through local stores and second-hand places or what?
>>
>>8426094
just do it teavana-style and put it in a big clear container
please don't actually do this anon, but I'd like something comfier than the standard sealed metal bullet too
>>
Sup /tea/ new to the stuff. I'm trying out tea and blends and I want to keep far, far away from added sweeteners or sugar. What are some good teas I can get into that are great without sugar? So far I've enjoyed just straight-up green and black tea, green tea with mint, and Earl Grey.
>>
>>8426396
Buy the intro to tea from what-cha.

If you absolutely need sweetener use honey.
>>
>>8425018
It will work just fine. There's some risk of cracking or warping if you use a really high setting all the time. That risk is probably even lower for a kettle filled with water.
>>
how do I get into the specific types of green tea (sencha, matcha, etc)?
>>
>>8427338
Buy some good quality examples, make sure your brewing vessel is clean, use clean spring water and brew at the right temperature for the right amount of time.

If you don't like it, don't force yourself! Life is too short.

Just went to customs to get my ys order, 7 different wuyis, only had one so far, the wild dhp, pretty solid much better than the dhp got from them a while back

Seems nice, keep in mind the two cakes you have there are not pure tea one has camellia flower mixed in and the other has jiaogulan, they arent really expensive so no harm desu.
The thing im not sure about is if the fact your dancong is from 2015 is a bad thing or if it doesnt really matter, especially since it's fairly expensive

Could try these if aesthetics and quality trump price for you.
