If I had the money I would try to grow it with hydroponics but I've read even that is very difficult.

This is because most of the wasabi served outside of Japan is a mixture of horseradish, mustard and food coloring.

Real wasabi tastes more herbal than the horseradish stuff. It’s hot but doesn’t have a lingering, burning aftertaste.

I've researched it. It's not that it's impossible to do outside of japan, it's that growing wasabi takes an immense amount of water. It could be done pretty much anywhere, but it isn't practical due to the expense. Nobody bothers to do it outside of Japan because they don't care enough about wasabi to make it worth their while.

Heck, even in Japan the majority of wasabi is imitation.

I've heard that they grow it in Canada and sell it to Japan. I don't remember where in Canada exactly but I think in western part on the Pacific ocean coast.
