Whiskey.

What are you drinking, what are you buying, what are you eyeing up?

Pic related, sourced a bottle after an anon mentioned it in a thread a couple of weeks ago. Very unusual, very "green" taste. Not bad, but nothing like any scotch or bourbon I've had and difficult to get used to because of it.

Haven't tried the peated one but I have tried the regular one. I agree, like nothing I have ever tried before. Not sure if I liked it or not, will probably pick up another bottle if I see it on offer to double check.

Been drinking Glenmorangie Midwinter Night Dram recently after getting it for £25 in Costco. Quite unusual and quite subtle but very pleasant. Will buy another bottle and hide it away until next winter I think.
>>
>>8360548
>Not sure if I liked it or not
Yeah, I get that. I reckon it's just a case of getting used to it, though. I started on bourbon and felt the exact same way when I started drinking scotch, so I guess feeling that way about Penderyn is just getting used to a new variety of whisky. It was definitely a worthwhile experience just for the uniqueness.
I guess you gotta give the Welsh credit for the fact their whisky is a unique variety. Japanese whisky just tastes like a variety of scotch and Canadian is similarly indistinct.

>midwinter night's dram
I have a bottle of that I've been going through for a year or so. It's okay, but to me it just seems like an inferior Balvenie 12 with a slightly grassier taste.
Might have to hit up Costco so I can give it a second chance, though.
>>
>>8360566
I have been getting in to bourbon more and more actually. Was initially put off by JD in my uni days (ok, not technically a bourbon) but gave it another go recently and I am glad I did. Current favourites are Bulleit and Buffalo Trace, got a bottle of Knob Creek on the way too.

I was initially disappointed with it too, but after spending an evening with it and giving it some time I find it very pleasant. Not one I would drink regularly, but something nice in the dark winter evenings. Or maybe the marketing has gotten to me, who knows! My local Costco started doing Lagavulin 16 again so need to go again soon.
>>
>>8360621
If you're getting into bourbon, try and lay your hands on a bottle of Four Roses. Small Batch is great and Single Barrel is a thing of beauty, but even their cheapest offering, Yellow Label, is impressively good for the price.
>>
>>8360637
I will be sure to look some of that out, thanks anon.

>>8360658
I quite like a gin and tonic sometimes, it is very refreshing and easy to drink quite a lot of if thats what you are in the mood for. I am a total pleb though, I just keep a bottle of Bombay Sapphire in and Fever Tree tonic. I even go all out and use the fancy glasses and a wedge of lime to pretend I am sophisticated
>>
>>8360658
All spirits come from clear distillates. The only thing that really defines them is the process they undertake along the way.

Gin's real defining factor is the botanicals that it's infused with, and the fact that historically this infusion originated as a medicinal elixir. It's enough to set it apart as an individual drink, even though I personally dislike it.

Bought this 2 weeks ago. Haven't tried it beside small cup at the vendor's place. It seemed ok. A canadian whisky with mapple.
What do you guys think of it ? Anybody knows this ?
>>
Any of you tied Aberlour 12? On offer at my local supermarket and I am tempted to get a bottle
>>
>>8360766
IIRC nothing exceptionnal, but still a good QRP, easy to drink. Go get a bottle dude and try it.
>>
>>8360735
Haven't had it, but I'm always cautious of liqueurs. More often than not, they're just alcoholic syrup that might have a slight taste of the booze they use as a base.

Never really found a reason to buy a liqueur except for fancy cocktail-making. Certainly wouldn't drink it straight.
>>
>>8360766

I always have a bottle of Aberlour 12 as one of my standard 'cheap' Scotches. Definitely go for it

I'm picking up a new bottle soon, but I'm not sure what to go for. My choice is between
>Lagavulin 16
>Ardbeg 10
>Eagle Rare
>Evan Williams Single Barrel

What's your recommendation, whis/ck/y?
>>
So, I've generally been a bourbon/rye guy. Bulliet, Woodford Reserve, and Knob Creek have been my go to's.

I'm just now getting into Scotch. I've had Bowmore 15, Laphroig 10, Dalwhinnie 15, and Macallan 12 DC. The Macallan was probably myfavorite. What else is worth trying?
>>
>>8361917
Balvenie 12 Doublewood, Glengoyne 12 and Glenfiddich 15 are all good scotches that should please a newcomer's palate.
>>
>>8361179
yes all of those
>>
>>8361947
But if I had to pick only one?
>>
>>8360735

I got a bottle for an early Christmas present and it's not bad. I enjoyed it neat before brunch or after supper.

I find that the maple flavour does limit it's versatility, but it does have it's uses (Especially when combined with breakfast)
>>

Glenlivet 12, 15 and 18 are great Highland scotches. If you liked the Laphroaig you should try Lagavulin, Bruichladdich and Ardbeg.

>>8361179
I would toss a coin between Ardbeg and Laphroaig
>>
had a bottle of hakushu after a particular convention I set up. Fantastic taste, a bit smokey... delicious! And it was about $80 per bottle at the time. I had 3 shots, and gave a bit away to a friend. Alcoholic roommate drank the rest of it. as well as the rest of a bottle of gifted vodka.

I don't bring alcohol home anymore.

It's decent. Only way to describe it, really. Not bad, not great, just thoroughly decent.

Depending on what you pay for it, just don't expect it to be amazing and you'll be happy enough. It's inferior to Laphroaig 10 though, I'll say that much.

>>8362178
Thanks bruh. I've been eyeing Ardbeg for a while but I didn't want to take a gamble on it if Laphroaig or those bourbons outclassed it to any significant degree. It's really that good?
>>

Lagavulin*, my bad.
>>
>>8362186
It is a toss up for me if I prefer Lagavulin or Ardbeg, haven't had the two side by side in a while. You can't go wrong with either really.

Ardbeg isn't chill filtered so gives a slightly more pleasant feel in the mouth, and is slightly smokier and fuller bodied than Lagavulin which I find to be a tad smoother.

Both are fantastic. Got a bottle of Ardbeg in my cupboard which I have been enjoying but now you have reminded me I might nip to Costco and pick up a bottle of Lagavulin.

Serious dark horse. I expected it to be only a marginal improvement, but this is some seriously decent shit. Flavourful, smooth, sweet and spicy with no unpleasant burn. Recommend.

Looking for a bottle for my old man for Christmas. Was thinking Yamazaki 12 since we were in Tokyo last year for the holiday and tried some great whiskey together. Looking to spend $70-125. Any other Japanese whiskies I should look at at that price point that's somewhat easy to acquire?

I was also considering just picking up a bottle of Lagavulin 16/Glenlivet 18/Arbelour 18/etc but going straight to the Scotch doesnt have the same personal meaning.

>>
>>8365253
Won't deny that, but claiming that it's only acceptable to drink high proof whisky and then say you're supposed to water it down is idiocy of the highest degree.

High proof whisky has its own flavours, and should be enjoyed for that. That's the merit of it, not the fact that you're "better" if you drink it.

>>
>>8365599
Yes. You learn to get past the burn or you water down to enjoy the flavour. That being said I wouldn't drink non alcoholic whiskey for the flavour.
>>
>>8365607
There is definitely a discernable difference between Whiskey, Gin, Brandy, et cetera, but I feel the 40% overpowers any appreciation of the 60% "impurity". Alcohol overpowers the taste of the barley mash, juniper berries, or wine to the point where it's unpleasant.

I will say, I remember when I tasted alcohol in beer and wine, and now I don't taste it anymore.

I suppose you can learn to get past the burn, but I've spent the same time around spirits as I have around beer, wine and liqueurs (2 years), and spirits still don't appeal to me.

I keep buying 1.75l of four roses every so often.

Its like 36 bucks where i live which is the cheapest of the bulliet/wild buffalo/four roses recs ive seen in my time lurking these threads

Im just into liquor to drown my thought a bit without burning my nose a bit while i drink it. I tried a bottle of ardbeg 10 and it was good but just too expensive and my friends wouldnt drink it. I had to go through this whole thing of teaching them about it having a cork which was well worth it though. That was probably my favorite part of wild buffalo too.

Anyway, cheap whiskey recs? Or is this even the right liquor for me?
>>
>>8366381
For cheap stuff Jim Beam white is hard to knock. Tastes perfectly good and at £13 a bottle you can't argue. Buffalo Trace is £18 a go and a big step up, great stuff.

For malts, Aberlour 10 is about £22 and very pleasant. Sometimes the NAS Laphroaigs like Select come down to cheap money on offer too

Good cheap blended whisky:

>Islay Mist
>Famous Grouse (best of the bottom shelf)

Good cheap bourbon:
>Jim Beam White

Sapporo- beginners can have it with soda

Woodford Reserve,

You're going to buy scotch for your dad who took you to Japan and you pick a 12 year? Hibiki 17. Have some tact.
>>
>>8365077
For my money, Nikka from the barrel is the best Jap whisky in that price bracket. Yes it's only 50cl rather than 70, but you'll enjoy every damn drop. Hibiki 12 was delicious but the price has gone crazy since the stopped producing it. Their non age stuff might be worth a look but can't comment on quality
>>
>>8368729
Your gonna be putting down about 250 for that though
>>
>>8362078
Ardmore is garbage. It's an Aberdeen whisky so nothing like Laphroaig. No smoke/peat. If you want a Laphroaig alternative that is generally a little cheaper try highland park 12

>Hibiki 12 was delicious but the price has gone crazy since the stopped producing it

Exactly what I came here to say. I actually have a bit of a bottle left and was considering buying another, until I saw the prices. It is good, but not £200+ good. Comparable to a decent single malt around the £50 price bracket I reckon. Now I need a special occasion to justify finishing it!

It is a shame the Japanese stuff has become such a meme with the stupid prices, hopefully it will settle back down soon.
>>
>>8369640
Have you tried the Hibiki Harmony? That seems to have replaced the price point of the 12, but it just sounds too much like a perfume for me to commit to a purchase

I have not, the 12 was really pushing it as far as pricing goes when it was in supermarkets, I can only imagine the Harmony is a younger inferior version they are still wanting £50 for. Happy to be proven wrong, but you can get a really good bottle of malt for that and I don't fancy taking the risk.

>>8370324
Buffalo Trace IMO, but Jim Beam is much better than it should be for a really cheap bourbon. Wild Turkey 101 is really good, the 81 is ok but a bit harsh and bland, better off with Buffalo Trace at that price i reckon

If I have to choose a whiskey, it's bourbon. I think it encapsulates what whiskey is supposed to be; fiery, sweet and smokey. Scotch is nice but so refined I think it needs a different title. Irish whiskey is fun but it makes me angry. Canadian whiskey is a bastard curse and I don't enjoy it.

Larceny is my favorite budget bourbon right now along with Fighting Cock. Close third would be EH Taylor Small Batch.
>>
My usual is standard Woodford Reserve, but I've been hearing from a few friends about a brand called Tincup. I've done a lot of looking into it and am curious to try, but three problems:
Can't find a place local that sells it
Can't order online cause that's illegal in Kentucky, fucking degenerates
Seems to have rather conflicting reviews, such as pic related.

Anyone here tried it? Thoughts on it?
>>
>>8371851
To me it had an odd flavor note that I associate with sorghum, not my favorite. If you live in KY you have plenty of better choices dude.

I've been really put off by the price of their product. Yeah it's good but usually for the price of one bottle of Bourye I can buy two bottles of other really good stuff and blend it myself.
>>
Had a bottle of Caol Ila 11yr cask strength delivered yesterday, haven't opened it yet. Usually have a bottle of Laphroaig or Lagavulin on the go.

Currently exploring bourbons since I've not got much experience with them, just finished off a Bulleit and wasn't too impressed. Buffalo Trace is next on the list

Fuck no, absolutely not.
SUPERIOR ENTRY LEVEL MALTS:
Speyside: Glendronach 12
Highland: Clynelish 14
Lowland: Auchentoshan 12 or Three Wood
Campbeltown: Hazelburn 12
Islands: Arran 14
Islay: Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Peated Malt

Absolutely terrible
>>8366289
Yeah the American Oak is easily their worst core expression. The Valinch and CS offerings blow it out of the water.
If your at a scotch bar next time maybe try the Virgin Oak as its a limited edition that's likely never coming out again and its still pretty tasty at 46%.
>>8371707
Glenfarclas 105 if you can find it. If not get the A'bunadh since the price will eventually go up for that shit.
>>8371810
Aberlour is 12 or go home.
Dalwhinnie 15 is way too simple for the price.
Glenmo 10 is watery trash.
Balvenie Doublewood is barely better then Glenmo and worse then Aberlour 12.
I agree with the rest.
Glendronach and Glenfarclas are still the best bang for buck sherried whisky.
>>8371851
Tincup is diluted shit and massively overpriced.
>>
Why does all whiskey taste the same to me
>>
>>8372644
Does it really all taste like whiskey?
>>
>>8372644
Because you need to develop a palate for whisky first. Start with dark beer and wine and move your way up to rye and irish whiskey.

Depends where you're at anon; if you're in the UK, I managed to find Glengoyne 14 on offer in Marks & Spencers. Easily one of the smoothest scotches I've ever had.

Currently drinking some Gentleman Jack gradually that I've had for ages, whilst definitely not the best its pretty alright. I'm new to American Whiskies so looking for recs that arent too pricey (Ausfag and liquor tax here is insane).

I had a flight of scotches when I was backpacking in Scotland. Auchentoshan was definitely my favorite, probably still my favorite Scotch Whisky
>>
Perhaps dumb question from a novice: when someone talks of the "peatiness" of a whisky, what does that mean?
>>
Had a bottle of lagavulin 16 yesterday, so good.
>>
>>8373743
Balvenie doublewood is beautiful stuff. Tastes like treacle, sweet spices and dried fruit. Reminds me of my nan's sticky toffee pudding.

The best cheap american offerings are bulleit bourbon, which is rye-heavy and has a peppery spice to it, buffalo trace which is smooth and sweet, and four roses yellow label which has a floral honey taste. Elijah Craig 12yo is good if you can afford it, it's slightly pricier but a very rich and woody whiskey.

>>8373863
They're talking about the smoky flavour of a scotch, typically imparted by the peat fires used to toast the barley grain. How much of the grain is toasted with peat fires dictates how strong the peat-smoke flavour will be in the end product. That's "peatiness".

Bartenders are there not only to prepare and serve drinks but to recommend and help you if you don't know anything about ordering drinks at a bar.
>>
>>8374880
do you only pay cash? are you supposed to tip?

i dont know anything about brands or anything like that
>>
>>8374903
Well I'm Swedish so I'm not entirely sure about how it goes down in the USA, presuming you live there (you guys are crazy about tipping).

Let's say you want some whiskey. Say you named a brand, the bartender still wants to know how much you want, so you tell him, at least thats how I do it. Standard for Whiskey is 4 deciliters, but you americans (if that's is where you are from) have imperial units so I'm not sure how to go about.

The idea of drinking locally made liquor in Africa scares the hell out of me just based on the packaging. Another winner like this (I think the guy showing me it was in Uganda) was "Senator Brand" gin. (now is this just one shot, unless i ask for a double)?
>>
>>8374972
(Yeah, you'll get one shot. Depending on how fancy the place is it'll come in a shot glass or an old fashioned glass. But asking for 'scotch' is probably just going to get you the well blend.)

Shit like that is why I can't get into libertarianism. I want personal freedom and all, but goddamn, I like having shit like the FDA.
>>
>>8374972
Don't feel like you need to pretend you know what you're doing. A bartender will know you're clueless the second you open your mouth.

Just be honest and say "Can you recommend a good single malt for a beginner?", and any bartender worth his salt will do his best to make a solid recommendation. They don't want to push their most expensive booze on you only for you to realize you hate it; they want to help you find one you enjoy so you'll order more of them.
When he helps you pick one out, ask for it straight. Don't take ice with a decent single malt.

Honesty is your friend. Knowing you're not trying to pretend in front of someone who knows their shit will help your confidence.

So it's been several years since I drank Teachers, Bells or Grants, and I largely remember them as being garbage, but I just wanted to know if any of you guys have any opinions on those three.

I've been meaning to back and try them again since y'know, evolving palates and whatnot, but I'm in the peat mines when it comes to drinking these days and I'm not sure I'd taste anything when it comes to those. I've already had to basically swear off irish stuff because I just don't taste anything anymore.
>>
>>8375271
They're still garbage.

My housemate bought me a bottle of Grant's for christmas back in my uni days and I swear to god it was like drinking a rusty sawblade.

Teacher's is probably the least offensive bottom shelf blend, but I wouldn't personally touch the stuff.

>>8375053
There's no reason to assume industry regulators wouldn't exist in the absence of state intervention. If you played videogames in the late 80s and early 90s you probably remember the Nintendo seal of quality. An independent regulator could do for antifreeze what that did for broken shovelware. Distillers and bottlers would have a market incentive to cooperate with regulators to increase the perceived value of their product, and regulators would have an incentive to avoid bribes and maintain their own integrity as to maintain and increase trust in their certificates.

There are a number of things wrong with libertarianism as a political philosophy, namely the valuation of economic prosperity over cultural integrity, but 'muh regulators' isn't really one of them. Any regulatory body that wouldn't exist in a free market economy is a waste of taxpayer money anyway.
