Want to make potato gratin. Bought a mandolin. Any tips? My dad made it for me when i was a kid and pretty sure it gave me food poisoning and was really undercooked. I'm kind of scared of it.

You don't need a mandolin to slice spuds thinly. You just need good knife skills.
The potatoes take longer to cook than you'd think. But that's about it, it's rather straight forward.

Layer potato>cheese>dust of flour>salt and pepper until the dish is full. Pour Half and Half or Heavy cream in to halfway up the dish. Cover with foil and bake at 375 for one hour. Remove foil and cook another 15-20 minutes.
