Just had a marranita, basically a gargantuan quesadilla filled with ridiculous amounts of cheese, bacon and pork. Delicious but nothing too exciting
Are you in the city, or just the resort area?
In the city, there's an open market that has pretty good food. This one middle-aged guy that runs a torta stand has pretty good stuff, and he's friendly as fuck. One of my best street food experiences ever. If you want more proper good, Yucatan has some really great local foods (sopa de lima being one of them). Cochinita pibil is amazing, as are the stuffed tortilla things you can find all over the place. Yucatecan rellenos of different varieties are good, too, as are most of the sauce-covered foods you'll encounter (sorry, I don't remember the name of any of them). Basically, eat stuff locals are eating, and it'll probably be good.

Yeah, I had the cochinita on a place mostly locals were eating at. Great stuff, huge portions, and a fraction of the price of the food in the tourist area. Thanks for the tips, any liquors/drinks you'd recommend trying (other than mezcal)?

Eat random street food until you spend the rest of your trip on the shitter.
Make sure you get out of the main tourist areas if you want to play street food roulette for real.

Besides Mezcal, I'd probably recommend xtabentun. It's a local drink made out of honey and herbs and shit. It's probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed it; either way, it's the drink that's local to Yucatan, so it's worth a try.
I have no idea how easy it'll be to find, though. I only spent a day in Cancun. But it was all over Merida, so I'm sure at least some places will have it, especially if locals go there.
