The whole reason for the practice is sound. It's just that the average joe won't be careful, and most importantly won't clean surfaces afterwards, which increases risk that juice germs will contaminate things which never get cooked. It's fine to wash poultry, but you need to be "pro" and you need to bleach the sink, handles and countertops when finished. Sometimes I wash, sometimes I don't, but I'm not making salad in the kitchen until everything is disinfected. If you have to give the general masses advice, it's just to include the risk of a contaminated kitchen.

we wash ours in the laundry room sink so it's deep enough to avoid splash back and is separate from food prep.
