tl;dr People on YTMND started putting rap music to Moon Man gifs. Then somebody made the first KKK rap with a text-to-speech program and it took off from there.

The "alt-right" covers everyone from political apathetics who found themselves on the fringe because the Overton window shifted on them to literal Nazis and white nationalists who have been waiting with bells on for a race war since the 90s. Until America goes full 14/88 and the ghost of Hitler wins an election bid, "their boy" won't be in power.

When/where did these commercials air? I have no recollection of this before /pol/ took it over.

Not exactly. Its really two different groups fighting for the title, the far right trying to rebrand themselves as they tried with the "American Independent" Party, and younger more conservative libertarian types. MSM claims they're all the former to discredit the latter majority and as a result its had a positive feedback loop making white supremacists think their views have gone mainstream.
