How necessary is it to use a cast iron skillet for making a pizza? can i make due with any regular ol pan? I'm broke and nobody I know has a cast iron skillet.

It's not necessary at all. Any oven-safe pan will work. However, you will have better results with a thick, heavy, pan. That's why people use things like cast iron pans, pizza stones, or pieces of brick. It's better, but not essential at all.
