4 of the best beers I've had

1. Brewdog Tokyo
2. Chimay Dorée Goud
3. Chouffe Houblon
4. Ridgeway Imperial Porter (they don't make it anymore I think)

Finland. I don't really have a 'go to' beer. I usually go for the cheapest option in relation to alc. strength.

Had a beer flavoured with ambergris today, really interesting, but in a good way. Smelled like the ocean and tasted like musk lollies- they have a really artificial floral taste, like fake rose or violet essence.

Ahh yes Schlenkerla is good. Doppelbock is a little bit to sweet for me though.

Riedenburger Bräu is quite good too. They use different grain for flavors like old variations like Emmer-Korn. Makes the beer taste more like bread if I had to describe it.

Region is Germany. Bamberg actally where Schlenkerla comes from.

Stop being a troll and have a real conversation about beer. Have you had every single stout made in US and Europe (and elsewhere)? Do you have a palate for beer and the vocabulary to express notes on flavors, mouthfeel, and aroma. Or did you just drink a good American stout and decide it's just the fuckin' lily of beers.
>>
>>8268174
Do you seriously think I have never tried Guinness?
Calm down man, my point was why try minor variations of a mediocre beer a bunch of different times when you likely have a whole bunch of better stuff made by all sorts of different people readily available?
>>
>>8265078
any beer by Barley Brown's Brewing: pallet jack, hand truck, speed wobble. lots of oregon pale ales. belgium makes some good stuff too. im from Oregon, USA
>>
>>8268181
It's a really watery stout. Very poor body and watered down flavor.

I don't know what you're getting at. Everyone knows this.
>>
>>8268181
>whole bunch of better stuff made by all sorts of different people readily available
That's real descriptive baby cakes.
Guinness is made in Nigeria, Germay, Jamaica, and of course Ireland. Not sure if it's still made in Canada or not.
>It's a really watery stout. Very poor body and watered down flavor.
Guinness is pretty thick and has several layers of flavor, are you sure you've had one before?
Yeah Draught is pretty water but it's 4.2% compared to 6% for extra stout.
>>
>>8268204
as far as Guinness stouts go I have tried their draught in America and Ireland, also the extra stout and foreign extra stout, as wdll as the west indies porter.
The regular old Guinness draught is watery as shit, its the Bud Light of Stout. Some of the other ones are good, but none are special, if you are looking for top tier stout, Guinness isn't really the way to go. If you are looking for decent cheap beer its an ok choice
>>
>>8268214
>but none are special
they've been in business for over 250 years, I'd say that qualifies as special.
>cheap
Where? Extra Stout is 10 bucks a six-pack here. A 4-pack of Draught is almost that much. (Pro-tip: add vanilla ice cream and crushed up oreos)
>>
>>8268227
>they've been in business for over 250 years, I'd say that qualifies as special
yeah, and McDonald's makes the best cheeseburgers right?

I don't know man, I love stouts, but I find American style ones much better than dry Irish style ones (but I like both)
>>
>>8268235
It doesn't take skill to throw some fucking hamburger meat on a grill and slap in on some bun with some vegetables. Why are you even comparing these two things?
>American style ones

Don't know the FIRST thing about beers-- just drink whatever the fuck my friends are drinking... but is there a beer that

1. does not make me feel bloated as fuck
2. isnt a bitter as fuck "manly" IPA type shit
3. does not taste like pisswater (ie corona, heineken, etc.)

Basically is there a middle of the road beer that's easy to enjoy without having to develop too much of a "taste" for that isn't some supermarket brand??

Well Founders Breakfast Stout is a great place to start, its probably the one that got me to start loving stout, most good beer is pretty regional so it depends on where you live
>>
>>8268247
most amber/red ales and lagers would fill that category. Its pretty likely the the flagship beer form your biggest local breweries is in that category
>>
>>8268247
You've left yourself quite a wide array of beers.

Pale Ales, Lagers, Pilsners and lots of variations are light, quality really depends on who is making them. I don't know about outside USA but in America these days there are plenty of options to pick from.

Stone IPA is my go-to beer. I enjoy a variety of styles and brands but if I'm feeling indecisive you can't go wrong with the beer. Stone has somewhat of a reputation of making ultra-bitter "hop smoothies" but their original IPA is well balanced and very good.

They put that "ages well" on the label so you buy more, versus just what you want for a single session. Marketing 101
But when you read actual comments from Dogfish Head, they'll differ than their own label.

>I've been really into pic related recently, does anyone know of any similar beers?
I just read it has honey, rye and wheat...one of those old time recipes.

You'd probably enjoy getting the Dogfish Head limited brews that come from "old" recipes, like Midas Touch. Read some labels whenever you hit their section. They've done some old mayan recipes, chinese, egyptian goodies, spices and honey in there.
You might enjoy some of the christmastime and thanksgiving edition beers from local craft breweries that are _not_ the pumpkin ales. Ales with honey and some random spiciness or orange peel. The spice will mimic the rye in what you like in that Jefferson.

How come pabst gets a pass from so many hipster beer drinkers it's really poor quality and nothing special above other lawn mowing types but they'll put Busch or millers down and not pabst. Even though pabst is made at the same brewery as miller/coors/keystone but with more corn adjunct not really even an adjunct at that point.
>>
>>8284768
I put down Coors as pissy for sure, but Millers i can accept. Well i do accept Coors as well for just getting drunk.
>>
>>8284768
>How come pabst gets a pass from so many hipster beer drinkers
I don't know how Hipster drinkers think about the beer (maybe it's cheap for them?) but I do know that whenever there's Pabst at a bar or a house party, fun times are sure to follow.

Whenever there's Pabst, the implication is parties and other shenanigans
>>
>>8284780
So its just a mental thing? Cuz hamms, Busch, and keystone are usually a buck cheaper where I'm from and to be honest if I'm gonna drink shitty beer to get plastered it better be the cheapest thing I can find. Because sure they all have slightly different flavors but we already established that's not what they're for.
>>
>>8284780
>>8284794
Also me and m9 m8 always brewed our own beer for house parties if we wanted something cheap so I never experienced said pabst euphoria
>>
>>8284794

Ding ding ding. Busch and Keystone fall under this category as well. They're just beers that get you loose and silly with other people.

>>8284799
I really need to learn how to brew beer for myself and for parties, so good for you m8. I'm jelly.
>>
>>8284815
It's not particularly hard to do. We started in high school cuz you only have to be 18 to buy all your brewing essentials. Started with kits, a really cheap, efficient, and simple way to start. After you get the basics down you can search for more and more recipes and techniques online. It's crazy how into it you can go. I got an all grain mash lager with mosaic hops chillin in my commercial fridge right now. Even easier than beer tho is cider. Here was my recipe for that.
>5 gal ( most homebrew recipe are based on 5 gal) raw, unprocessed apple cider. Finding this at a reasonable price is the hardest part
>one packet of home brewing ale yeast. I like the dry kind I find it to be nearly fool proof
>hand full of cinnamon sticks, handful of whole cloves and whole allspice
>1lb pure raw honey
Bring cider and spices up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour in 5 gallon food grade plastic bucket that was sanitized immediately prior to the pour. Pop on a lid with a hole for a water lock. Set aside somewhere that is over 53 degrees but under 70 degrees for one week. To make fizzy after the one week warm up your honey til runny microwaving works fine just be careful not to overheat. Add the honey to the mixture and bottle your cider in your preferred size bottles. Cap with metal caps. No wine bottles. The residual yeasts will eat all the sugar in the honey you just added and fart out co2. The filled bottles leave no room for the glasses to escape and thus it is forced into the liquid. Bottles should be filled a quarter inch to the top. Put in your fridge for another week or two and enjoy.

If they distribute your ways, Rochester Mills Milkshake Stout is great. It's a Michigan beer but I've seen them complaining about being unable to sell it as "beer" in Germany due to the lactose, so maybe it's outside Michigan?

Saugatuck has a Neapolitan Milk Stout that's great too. Same issue as above. Stone's Coffee Milk Stout is pretty good too and you can probably find it easily.

USA. I pretty much only like stouts.

I found a bottleshop a few weeks ago with all 4 of their seasonal variants. The normal oak aged yeti sucks dick, but that espresso yeti is delicious. I still prefer the original overall.

First time on /ck/, love beer though. USA, PNW to be specific.

Anyone else at a strange spot in your beer experience? I started as a lot of us did; IPAs all day long. Trying every IPA and variation thereof. Then moving on to stouts including some amazing barrel-aged ones (to this day Fremont KDS is my favorite beer of all time), then the move on to other more obscure styles.

When it comes to styles I've tried, more or less, all of the ones I can get my hands on and in the Pacific Northwest we have many options. I'm at a phase where I'm not seeking out new beers anymore though, and it makes me kind of sad. That journey was a lot of the fun. Is it the money? Kind of, craft beer is a spendy hobby especially when you get into sours (Cascade is expensive af).

I'm in the same boat. Went from ipas to stouts and porters back to ipas and now I just pick up something if it sounds interesting. I had a wheat wine ale a little while ago that was really good. First time I've ever tried one. Now I'm going for triples just because I've only tried a couple before, but my go to has changed to any local pils. Pic related is usually the one, but a place called bauhaus makes a good one too.
Oh I also tried that omnipollo DIPA finally and it's fantastic.

I like it because its smooth and cheap I drink around 6-8 during week nights and the majority of a 30pack during the weekend

What's the difference between a porter and a stout?
>>
>>8289640
The oatmeal version is my favorite.

Stout is usually a little darker than porter, but the boundary is ill defined and many things sold as one could easily be sold as the other

Newcastle upon Tyne here. This is Newcastle Brown Ale, which I have found in the US. Also know as 'Broon' (dialect) or 'Dog', as in the husband says to the wife 'I'm just taking the dog for a walk' when he means he's going to the pub for a quick one or two.
Always served in the type of glass in the pic, known as a a schooner (not a type of sailing vessel).
Very similar to Samuel Adams, the nicest beer I found in the US.

stout tend to have a crispier taste IMO but yeah sometimes it can be whatever because of the lack of definition. But I tend to prefer stouts over porters quite often.

Who would drink a beer in a blue plastic glass?
>>
>>8265078

Ayinger's beers are all great and basically the only German beer I can find in the USA that isn't owned by ABInBev or some other conglomerate.

My favorite beer might be Anchor Christmas Ale.

But it's hard to pick a favorite across all styles.
>>
>>8271196

Strongbow isn't even cider. It's apple flavored, sugary alco-pop that happens to have some apple juice in it.
>>
Basically anything by New Glarus.

All their standard beers are some of the best within their style, but then they also make incredible sours (spontaneously fermented), amazing fruit beers, and great European-style beers (Zwickel/Keller Pils).

The head brewer actually did his apprenticeship at Ayinger.

Probably the best made IPA I've had.

There are other great ones with much more intense hops and newer/more innovative flavors, but Two Hearted is so good. I love how minerally it is too.
>>
>>8293793
I'd agree. No matter how many new ipas I try, two hearted will always be in my fridge.
>>
>>8293793
Two Hearted is definitely the best of the older tier of IPA, way better than any West Coast version, but some of the more recent citra/mosaicy ones are amazing

I like watermelon dorado because it'll get me trashed on one or two, depending on how quick I put them down

I like Hell or High Watermelon because it's wheaty/fruity

Not into the hoppy stuff, Space Dust IPA is undrinkable to me

Honestly, anon, that's the most disgusting beer I've ever had, but to each his own. If you're looking to get trashed, just drink Colt 45 or some other malt liquor.

Picked up this. Damn good stuff. Overtly malty backed up by bitter aged bourbon coffee flavor (in place of hoppes bitterness) with a hint of cocao. 12.3% ABV packs a real punch!
