Superheated steam can be stealthy in that kind of way, especially in microwaved drinks. I've only ever heard of the girl who swallowed the dry ice in her fogging out bar cocktail. Bartender told her to drink it, but she got -75C that burned and destroyed her esophagus and stomach, both removed.

OP, mouth, palate and tongue wounds are very fast healing, they just seem slow because they are so omnipresent.

if I eat something too hot, the first thing I do is open my mouth and leave it open for a couple seconds, so the heat can escape. This usually works, and I don't have to spit it out.
