This. It was exactly what I was thinking. Add more chili powder, a little oregano and cumin.

I start by making fresh chili paste from dried chiles, and I use vanilla, coffee, molasses, and liquid smoke as main flavoring agents. But at the end it's: black pepper, basil, oregano, marjoram and fresh sauteed veggies.
Also use stock and red wine instead of water where applicable
