Does anyone know what brands or kind of cast iron skillet is good to buy that might be sub-$100?

it's even pre seasoned for extra laziness. Hell, if you want to go nuts there's a 15" one that's only $40

Someone on /ck/ linked to this cast iron. The nice part is like the old cast irons skillets of the past, it has been sanded down for you. Pricey though. I would totally buy it for $50 but not $80. Of course you could just buy the cheapo Lodge and sand it down yourself.

is it really necessary to sand it down if you season it properly though?

I have a couple lodge items and compared to my father's and step father's handed down mirror finish cast iron I can really say that sanding and polishing will really improve their usability.

Pity. At least his pan looks normal. Unlike this guy's...

Damn I would go for that one if it wasn't shipping in December :[

Agree with this. Cheap. Especially if you have prime and AMZ pays the postage. Just made bacon on one of these tonight.
If you splurge, you can get another one with grill markings.

The kind you find at a garage sale for five dollars. My best pan I fished out of a dumpster at a job site after pouring a heap of busted tile on it. Surface like glass. Meanwhile my new production lodge gathers dust.

Yes. Seasoning is a microscopically thin layer that will never in a million years of use fill in the voids left by the coarse casting sand before the surface is just worn down instead.
Pans smoothed by use have just been very slowly and inefficiently sanded. They haven't magically accumulated a mirror like layer of polymerised fat a millimetre deep.

Sounds hipster, but really, garage sales, flea markets and thrift shops will have what you really want.
Look up a few names of old quality cast iron manufacturers (I love my Griswold pan more than anything) and keep an eye out.
A quick option is eBay, but you'll end up paying $60-100 in exchange for getting the exact pan you want
