That's pretty much what my Thanksgiving dinner is going to look like, and I am a civvy who will never have the cool stories to tell that you tend to pick up in the military.

All I get is cheap, single-serving food and cheap, many-serving cases of beer. And depression. And porn. I guess having 24-hour access to porn is the biggest advantage of not being in the military.

I made close to $50k tax free in 11 months of deployment on my 2nd tour. My first tour I made around 40k tax free. The only bills I had were a vehicle payment and insurance while it was in storage and I was gone. It ain't rich but it's not food stamp level in any way. Even with taxes before I got out I was making around $2000 every two weeks and then BAH was added since I was home and not deployed so my rent isn't even counted as a bill. Add in the free medical/dental/sore pussy and it's even better. Plus I got to go upgrade my associates degree to a bachelors for free after I got out and even still got paid for rent.

I wouldn't say that $50k/year is good money in general, no. But the Military situation is a bit different. You make that money and you pay no tax on it. You also don't have to pay for food, insurance, lodging, transportation, etc. When you factor that in it's the equivalent of making a lot more money in an normal job. Not to mention that if you're not a moron you will have wrangled a lot of GI bill benefits as well: up-front cash "signing bonus", free college education, access to loans with very favorable terms, and so on.

Hardly. Higher enlisted and officers make good money. Even lower enlisted make good money when you consider that they don't need experience in anything and compare it to minimum wage salary.

I think this misconception comes from people simply looking at base pay. Base pay is what you get on top of food and housing. So either they give you more money for those two things or provide them for you for free. So when you add in housing allowance on top of base pay it starts looking much more like average wages.

Alright..I'm somewhat triggered. As a member of the US army I can tell you this is bullshit. First its an old photo you can tell by the type of uniform he is wearing (UCP Pattern) which hasent been been used by the army while deployed since 2011. We use a multicam pattern so this is an old photo. Second since this is an old photo, OP is not currently deployed, so at his home station if he decided to eat thanksgiving dinner at a Military Dining Facility (DFAC) he would be served pretty decent meal. I've eaten thanksgiving meals on no less than 4 different army installations, including Afghanistan, and they always go all out for thanks giving. They even have the higher ranking command in dress uniforms serving the food 9 times out 10 for thanks giving. Honestly I dont even see you getting a meal like this on thanksgiving even while you were depolyed, usually the cooks order / store decent food for the thanksgiving meal because it is somewhat a moral boost. In short OP is giant faggot.

Free housing even if you live off base due to BAH/housing allowance.
