I've tried various "cheap" brands ranging from about $8 to about $30 for a tiny little jar. The ones that cost less than about $20 were outright awful. The stuff that cost $30 wasn't bad, but it sure as hell wasn't worth the money.

I've had the real stuff at a fancy dinner sponsored by my work. I dunno what it cost but it was genuine beluga. That was downright mouthgasmic.

This. If you like salty, fishy things Greek taramasalata and flying fish roe sushi are kind of fun, but nothing can touch the real deal. And the real deal is out of reach. Only time I tried it was at a party in Switzerland. Can't even get the good Russian stuff in the US (legally).
