Got my hands on a bottle of this stuff. It's great! But at 7$ a bottle, I don't see me buying this for anything other than special occasions. I think that's what it's mostly intended for though!

So yeah beer general. What are you guys drinking?

Does anyone drink Pumking from Southern Tier? People generally seem to enjoy it but I think it tastes like sickeningly sweet candy corn and chemicals or something. How is this garbage so popular? Tried it the past few years since some friends always get it every year and will probably pass on it this year since it is horrible.

Hey illinois bro. It's like $12 for a six pack so I haven't picked it up yet. How do you like it? I always stick with anti-hero.
>>

You're not alone. I used to say Southern Tier beer seemed like it was artificially flavored, and I've since seen and heard several other people say the same. It's always nice to know you're not crazy.

I will say I don't hate it, but I'm completely with you on it being too sweet and chemically.

Nice enough imperial stout. Some sour notes in the aftertaste due to the raspberries i guess. I do get some very nice berry notes in the mouth.
>>
>>8085796

Southern Tier's darker beers tends to be cloyingly sweet. I tried their Choklat Oranj and Salted Caramel stouts out of curiosity, and found them near undrinkable.

Right now I think it's Miller Draft.

>>

There is no occasion special enough to spend $7 on a single bottle of beer. I wouldn't spent that much if Hillary was assassinated, Kek came down from the heavens and blessed me with all the repeating digits, and Hitler rose from the dead to give me one of his old paintings all on the same day.
>English. Do you read it.
A better question is, "Grammar, do you know it?"

You can do whatever the hell you want, but if you do stupid shit you're going to get a proportional amount of shit flung at you. Yeah I post mostly mn and wi crap in here. I was just up in Grand Marais a couple weeks ago and stopped at castle danger on the way up. Love that place. The best beer I had from them was their stout aged in red wine barrels. It was incredible.

hell yeah castle danger is great, i just visited bent paddle yesterday, it was an awesome time. fresh bent hop on tap is incredible
>>

It all depends on the type of beer. Highly regarded stouts that start popping up on a limited basis in a certain area will almost always garner $5+ per bottle before regular distribution begins. Pretty stupid to get butthurt over OP when things like Goose Island/[insert rare seasonal beer releases] or Sam Adams Utopias exist. But I'm sure you've never overpaid for anything in your life.

Dude that shit is too old now. It was nice the week it came out. Gotta git that single hop freeesh. Working in the beer section at a booze store has spoiled me.

>>8085752
I had so many chances to get this at 5 bucks a pop I probably ended up spending 50 bucks on it. Maybe working at a beer store isn't so great.

Recently been living Sibling Rivalry from Off Color. They make amazing beer. Love em. Spiteful also does great shit. Never been disappointed by their brews. Half acre has been doing great as well, but as always you need to go to the tasting room to get their smaller brews.
>>
>>8086164
You can really get a good taste of what the mosaic hop provides. I like it much more than citra. Pipeworks does a better job with their single hop line. Last week they came out with Grungeist (green ghost) single hop, which was floral and tasted like sweet fruit. Very good hop that I hope to see more of. I just finished off a bomber of pipeworks single hop mosaic, and it was much more balanced and tasty than mosaic hero. Revolution just uses too much of the hop to even appreciate its flavor.

Oktoberfest.

Has anyone got experience with cream ales? From the top of my mind I've had To Öl Primal scream, pic related and Kilkenny. They are all very different and I would not have grouped them under the same style without knowing they were the same. I guess what I am trying to say is there a combining factor/typical cream ale so I can nail down what the style is all about?

Warlock is better, but I like it best agreed a year. It has gone down in quality the past few years. Pumking was much better even two years ago. It's gotten too big. I'll pick it up when it's on special for 3 bucks at the grocery store.
>>
>>8089903
That's normal for a glass of draft at a bar.
>>
>>8092170
Leffe is decent. If you like wheaty beers, you can enjoy it.
>>
>>8092170
Near you? Castle danger obviously, and on the wisconsin side of the bridge there's a place called the Thirsty Pagan. Last time I was there, the head brewer was super into sours and pretty damn good at them. I hear fitgers has good stuff, but it's a little fancier I guess. I also heard there's some new one going in along 61 a little ways past two harbor I think? Can't remember. Voyager brewing is just okay.
>>
I know a few breweries that go into distilling, but any distillery startups do brewing? To me it seems the technique is pretty similar for making wash for grain based spirits and beer, and it seems logical that a whisky startup might also brew beer as a way to get cashflow before the whisky matures. Is there something stopping them? I suppose there's a lot more stainless to invest in for parallel production and they can do gin as a ready to sell product, but is that all that's stopping them?

Just had my first Bomb! last night.

Pretty fucking fantastic. The layers of coffee and chocolate on top of an already great stout body were something else.

That said, I think I can get some beers that are just as good in a similar profile for less than $9 for 12 oz. Hell, Breakfast Stout is out, and for a couple bucks more I can get a four pack.

Also had pic related, Southern Tier's Sour Cherry Gose, and it was roughly exactly what I expected. Decent, but it's got that weird thing Southern Tier does where it tastes like there's artificial flavoring. In this case, like artificial cherry flavor. The salt was also much more up front than a typical gose, and the sour much less pronounced. Also, it was $4 for a single. Get Victory's Kirsch Gose instead.
>>
>>8090718
I've tried nine different oktoberfests in the past month, most in the past week.

Out of all of them, Cigar City's was clearly the best, and Left Hand's was clearly the second best. The CCB one is brewery site-exclusive, though, so I might not be helping you really.

The Left Hand is notably hoppier than a normal marzen, which normally I wouldn't like, but it works very well. Gives it some spice.

As far as the rest, I'd rank them thusly: >paulaner >sam adams > erie > sierra nevada > spaten > shiner > yuengling
>>
>>8092812

That's because those are shit.

>>8094949
is also steering you down a bad beginners path.

Go out and find pretty much anything labled "amber" "brown ale" "blond ale" or anything from Fat Tire brewing. Those are nice, easy drinking beers.

The one thing I will tell you is that you're probably not going to like much of it right away, especially if you're use to sweeter things like soda. Beer can take some getting use to and trying quite a few before you find what you like in the beginning. See if any stores in your area will let you mix and match beers so you can try a lot at once without committing to a six pack.
>>
>>8094938
Find a bottom shelf beer that you can get lots of for cheap and that tastes the least shitty to you compared to other bottom shelf beers. Force yourself to drink it until you're strangely attached to it. Occasionally pick up six packs of better more expensive beers. It's like calibrating your taste buds. Now you can appreciate how much better and different those beers are. Eventually you can compare them to other more expensive beers. When you don't wanna spend too much, you can always indulge in your base beer.

That's what I did at least.

I believe this is the right place to ask.

A while ago I had a glass of Kwak at a bar and I ((("""accidentally""")) somehow got the glass home with me. But before the adventure was over I noticed the lowest part of the wooden glass stand had come off in my bag. But then I realized: in this condition the glass was easy to detach from the stand something that I hadn't been able to do at the bar. So my simple question is thus:

Not necessarily. Some self-proclaimed 'beer haters' (in reality: pale macro lager haters) do like stout from the get go because it's so different to them from 'normal' beer. And Guinness is indeed a good beginners stout, despite being far from a top-notch one.

Victory DirtWolf is insane value at about 8$ a 4-pack for an exceptional DIPA. If you find it at a store less than a month old it has amazing quality/price ratio, I wouldn't buy it if it's over a month old though. Old Rasputin is similar and doesn't even have the freshness caveat.

This was me, in fact.

I hated -- HATED -- beer for almost my first quarter-century of life, because I'd had the most common beer -- American Adjunct Lager -- and the mos popular craft beer -- America Pale Ale.

Turns out, I fucking LOVE beer, I just don't like pale lagers, and I don't like (most) hop-forward beers.

The first time I had a bock, I loved it. The first time I had Guiness, I loved it. The first time I had a porter, I loved it. Most of those early beers I probably won't drink much ,if ever, again because of how far I've evolved past them, but stouts and porters and other full-bodied beers were absolutely a great beginner path for me.

There's so much variety in beer. It's possible to just hate beer plain and simple, but it's very likely you just happen to hate what you've tried, and what you've tried is a small corner of the landscape. I speak from experience.
>>
>>8097714

It is ahead of american macros for sure, but much closer to American macros than it is to legit beer

I normally point people to good German beer if they ask me for something like it. There's some really, really good German beer out there and it's a shame how much convincing it takes to get my customers to try it.

Still, there are likely local breweries that do European style beers justice. There are some breweries near me that specialize in it. Church Street for one.

I wouldn't put much faith in beer rating websites. They are highly skewed towards Americans and evangelistic new converts to craft beer with unrefined palates. I doubt many here would take them too seriously outside of when they want to use them to try and give weight to an argument.
>>
>>8099699
>They are highly skewed towards Americans
There is literally no evidence of this. Good beer itself obviously skews American as the vast majority of the best beer is made there, but to claim there is some inherent rating bias toward American beers without a shred of evidence is absurd

Surely I wouldn't take the exact hierarchy of any specific rating site within a style as law, and they become slightly more troublesome when comparing disparate styles, but the fact that this particular one rates more highly than every single German entry in the category cannot just be ignored because it is inconvenient for your stance
>>

This.

I don't understand why everyone feels the need to get so salty about this shit. Different countries put out good beer. Some countries do certain styles better than others. Trying to say a single place is the be-all, end-all is downright stupid.

For me, when I want some Belgian style shit, I'd rather not pay $20+ for the good imported stuff, and I'd rather just get like Ommegang/Allagash/whatever. Are they as good as say, Chimay? No, but they're still good, and the rather small difference in quality isn't worth doubling what I'm paying.

Just like I wouldn't expect anyone living across the pond to buy our better stouts and stuff. It's just not convenient. Doesn't make them any less good though.
>>
>>8099800

Personally, I don't derive any noticeably greater amount of enjoyment from a Chimay/Bernardus than I do from good beers of the same style made here in the US. That + the price difference clinch the deal for me.

But Chimay/Bernardus/etc.. are still more often than not rated higher than them, even if only by a minimal amount sometimes. So that's what I meant when I said that - they're technically rated better.

It's pretty sad that so many people in this thread are so quick hate on each-others preferred styles of beer, and are so limited in terms of what they're willing to try/like. Even sadder when they're close-minded about the fact that good beers are made in multiple countries, not just their own.

I tried pic related tonight out of curiosity. Not too big on IPAs myself, but it was pretty nice.

What do you mean?
Unless you have to drive somewhere later or have severe money problems, drink them

I want to get drunk enough. I dont want to feel like "damn I need MORE" after I finish all 4.

I mean you won't be wasted or anything, and could definitely drink more, but you should likely feel good afterwards
