Nah I wear protection and smoke calms them.

You can eat honeycombs as they are, right? Or decapped, at least.

If so, are they god tier?

>>
how do you stop the bees from flying away?
>>
>>7924875
Basically they don't fly away because they like their home. Providing them with a safe, comfy home and everything they need (flowers, a cup filled with water etc) makes them unlikely to leave.
>>
How do you know the bees aren't little robots spying on you?
>>
>>7924819
Do you sell it? Do you make mead?
>>
>>7924880
Not yet since it's my first harvest but I gave away quite a bit of it. Not a huge fan of booze so no.

Not OP but raw honeycomb is better than any store-bought candy I've ever had

What's the first letter of your first and last name?
>>

Nah brood wax frames are separate from honey.

>>7924884
Black honeybees, native from northern France. They feed on any local flowers really.

>>
>>7924819
Do you sell it or is it just hobby
>>
Awesome op,

My grandfather was a beekeeper, he even wove the beehives himself.

My bother ans I made candles of the wax.

My grandfsther told me to never put your beehive where there is a road between the hive and the flowers because then all your bees will get killed.

Do you have any experience with diffrent tssting honey from diffrent flowers/trees?
>>
>>7924907
Just for fun and delicious honey.

>>7924908
Sounds like he was a cool dude. Yeah, but not from my hive. I tend to prefer balanced honeys, not a huge fan of dark brown honeys from chestnut trees or pinetrees.

>>7924819
That's some nice honey you got there. Shame if anything were to...happen...to it.
>>
>>7924957
Not really. Basically I open the hive a few days before and put a contraption between the core of the hive (that I don't harvest) and the parts I harvest. Said contraption only lets bees one way (down towards the core) so the upper boxes are completely devoid of bees. I harvest them then place them back. Bees go back in and just see empty alveolas which they start filling. They don't even realise I've stolen the honey.
>>
Is honey seasonal? Is it any different at different times of the year? Are your bees pollinating any crops nearby? Do you topless photos of your gf that you wanna share?
>>
>>7924962

lol stupid bees.
>>
>>7924971
>Is honey seasonal?
Not quite but it's always harvested at least in early summer to late autumn, since bees need to rely on their stockpiles for winter.
>Is it any different at different times of the year?
Yep, different flowers bloom in different seasons and change the taste of honey. Spring honey is typically milder.
>Are your bees pollinating any crops nearby?
No crops nearby, thank fuck because they grow a lot of rapeseed in the area and it makes low grade honey.
>Do you topless photos of your gf that you wanna share?
Nah, I'm single and I'd rather have a cute bf right now.

What's your setup like? Would you recommend recreational beekeeping in a small/medium sized garden? Also once the bees settle in, what keeps them from moving their hive away?

>I'd rather have a cute bf right now.
If I get singles then we have to date each other.
>>
>>7924992
>What's your setup like?
Single box-style hive in a garden. For harvesting I just rented a centrifuge and a sift.
>Would you recommend recreational beekeeping in a small/medium sized garden?
Sure, if you know what you're doing. Bees fly up to 3 km to find flowers so the size of the garden isn't that important.
>Also once the bees settle in, what keeps them from moving their hive away?
Basically they only move if they find a better spot. Make the hive as good as possible for them (safety, access to water/flowers) and they won't leave. Technically nothing stops them from leaving.

I'm not the guy you're replying to, but my uncle keeps bees on his property. He has several dogs and cats (as well as ducks and chickens). I've spent a lot of time over there and never seen the bees fuck with the animals.

When does the Honey taste the best? Does it taste ike the Honey from the store?
>>
>>7925132
Guess it could work, food trucks are a new thing here and quite popular.

>>7925134
Honey doesn't spoil or degrade. I guess it's best directly when you eat the comb. Store bought honey is often laced with syrup but pure honey's taste just depends on the flowers used by the bees to make it.

>>
>>7925218
im in the Netherlands and the beekeeping scene is apparently good here, at my local weekend farmer market there are at least 3 honey stands to choose from

ive been seeing dead bees on the ground nearly every day this summer :(
>>
How did you get interested in beekeeping?
>>
>>7925253
I've always been interested by social insects like ants, I have a big garden so I thought why not.
>>
My wife has always loved bees, were both members of our local bee conservation society and she really wants to keep bees - but we have no idea how to start.
Could you give a quick rundown of the fundamentals?
>>
>>7925293
>my wifes daughter
>>
>>7925295
Get in touch with a beekeeper association or something. Basically you'll need to understand how to properly set up the hive (facing south, its opening towards where there are flowers, not crossing another beehive's entry axis, have a water source nearby), buy a swarm and put it gently in the hive, then you'll need to maintain it, inspect it one in a while (2 or 3 times a month) to check for anomalies and prevent it from creating a new swarm. Harvest is tricky but other beekepers are typically happy to help newcomers. So yeah, try to find someone who already knows his stuff or get a book. I use https://www.boutique-abeille.fr/rustica-editions,us,4,LIVRUSTICA.cfm solid resource but it's in French.
>>
Have you watched "More than Honey"?

>>
>>7925972
>reduce hive health issues anyways
Could you elaborate on that?
>>
>>7925992
As OP I honestly doubt it. Bees generate more brood if resources are plentiful, which I why I don't fuck around with the brood. A high population means a healthy hive. Extra queens are another story.
>>
>>7925992
>>7925997
Removing drone brood reduces mites.

Google it.
>>
>>7926002
I have no varroa destructor problems if that's what you imply. I have a special brush built in the beehive that drops all the mites.
>>
>>7924819
What would be your tips for someone who is interested in keeping their own hives?
>>
>>7926006
Well cool, that's not the case everywhere thus the reason why I stated where I am at this is a common practice and if you do so too why not eat them.
>>
>>7926010

My favorite honies in this order:
lychee, just perfection, the sweetest syrupy honey around
orange blossom, best in tea, iced and hot, toast, oatmeal
avocado. Best honey in the world to drizzle over soft and semihard funky cheese.
sea grape, spicy good, great on BBQ ribs and seafood

>why did a bee sting me on the throat while I was playing soccer as a child?
>why did a bee sting me on the lip when I was walking down the sidewalk as a child?
Most likely not a bee. Bees die when they sting so they do it only if they feel the hive is threatened. Most likely a hornet or a wasp.
>why did a bunch of bees sting my head and get stuck in my hair when I was mowing the lawn and accidentally mowed over their bee hole in the ground, don't they know that people mow lawns?
You disrupted their home.

How the fuck do queen bees work? Like is it a different kind of species, or are they just the alphas?
>>
>>7926783
They are basically bee larvaes fed with royal jelly. It's a substance that basically activates a bunch of genes in them that make them bigger and able to lay eggs. Workers tend to their needs for the queen's whole life and the queen just produces eggs for the hive.
>>
>>7926792

No. Several people have mentioned that lychee honey is great, whereas other crops like canola produce a poor honey. Just imagine the difference between a person living off nothing but cheetos compared to a person eating a balanced diet.
>>
>>7928447
>>7928608

Absolutely, different honeys taste different the same way different flowers smell different, different fruits taste different, etc.
>>
>>7928419
>Mah nigga. Got to try some while in Hong Kong, was surprisingly good. Too bad it's not as well known in Canada.
I can only source when I go to a Asian Festival in Homestead FL every year. Must be only a few groves that are all lychee in S. Florida.

The biggest taint of honey in Florida is florida holly. You can't control the bees finding it because holly is everywhere as a big nasty weed in neighboring untended properties, swales, and wild areas. So the term "wildflower" marked honey usually tastes horrible. You can't buy a honey without tasting it first. Florida holly tastes bad enough that you can't even relegate it to cooking purposes. Only bigger grove honey with huge acreage is the really delicious stuff.
>>

I did. He literally said that apiculture is like a Nazi work camp where the bees are like little Jews made to work for the benefit of the beekeeper. When I mentioned that the bees were kept in a comfortable environment or else they'd leave, he just replied with "If Auschwitz had the conditions of a 5 star hotel it'd still be immoral to keep the Jews there."

In a sense my room mate is like /pol/, in that a discussion on any topic will inevitably lead to "the Jews".
>>
>>7928447
>is all honey the same? as in does the type of pollen the bees collect make any difference?
Wayyyy different.
Avocado honey tastes like the buttery and green essence of the avocado and enriches savory things and funky cheeses. It is strongly flavored, not just a hint.
Clover honey, to me, the most common type in US groceries, is mildly flavored, more sweetness overall. Orange blossom honey which is around the same level of honey flavor and sweetness, has that aromatic floral aspect of the orange tree, but not as you think of as orangey. If you've ever smelled an orange blossom perfume oil, or had mediterranean orange flower water on say a dessert like baklava or a soaked cake, you'd know is pretty damn different than oranges, hard to describe but supremely delicious. So it fills the palate or nose with someone other than basic honey sweetness. Key lime honey is actually one step better, but more rare.

I suggest a store for you from Homestead FL. It is called "Robert Is Here" which has an online shop that doesn't price gauge vs amazon, pretty much farm to table normal prices. It has a cool local history too, if you wish to read about it. It's one of the places tourists might stop on their way to the FL Keys, or locals going to get a strawberry mango key lime milkshake before getting their U-pick tomatoes or strawberries, or picking up some cinnamon rolls from local anabaptists (aka amish) snowbirds who operate another farmstand down there.

Bees don't live in the ground man. That's like a mud dauber or something.

Don't feel too bad. I was stung by a wasp walking down the sidewalk in the suburbs because my retarded neighbors don't trim their plants and let everything over grow into pathways so there's bees and wasps everywhere. I had to miss work and walked to the store for anti histamines even though my leg was swelling up.

Ask him what if Auschwitz had no locks or doors and if the jews choose to stay there on their own volition? Because that's what happens with beekeping. The bees are free to come and go as they please. If they found the conditions unsatisfactory they'd just leave of their own free will.
>>
>>7928682

I've found that many ignorant people refer to any flying insect that stings as a "bee" regardless as to what it actually is. Wasps, hornets, yellowjackets, etc, all get labeled as "bees" by retards.

Mud daubers don't live in the ground. They build nests high up, in/on buildings, trees, etc. While they can sting, it's nearly impossible to get one to actually sting you. They don't defend their nests and aren't territorial, unlike most wasps, bees, and hornets.

There are, however, other kinds of wasps which live underground. Yellowjackets can make underground nests too. Both are territorial and will certainly defend their nest if you fuck with it.

>That's like a mud dauber or something.
>>
>>7928691
I've said that to him before. He still calls it exploitation while I think of it as a form of mutalism that improves the lives of bees, plants, and humans.

>>7928675
He'll just report me for hate speech and I'll be the one forced to move out. I wouldn't put it past him to do something like that. He's indirectly admitted that he's fine with lying if it leads to a moral good.

Sorry I'm from Florida. I once ran away from something that came out of a ground nest because I stepped on it by mistake. I was told it was a mud dauber? My dad is a fucking retard though so there you go.

It wasn't a normal nest though and the thing that chased me didn't look like the pictures on google, it was like a very dark colored wasp and had a huge stinger which is why I hauled ass into my house.
But it's Florida so as soon as I got inside there was a spider waiting for me.
>>
>>7928736
>like a very dark colored wasp

Was it really huge, and just one of them? If so, probably a cicada killer.
>>
>>7928749
>cicada
I thought that was one of the few bugs Florida didn't have??
It was just a hole in the ground too, like no signs of a nest.
>>
>>7928768
I've never been to Florida, but I googled it and apparently there are both cicadas and the cicada-killer wasps which prey on them in Florida.

But yeah, they're huge wasps, mostly dark in color, and they make holes in the ground. They don't really "live" in the holes, they stock 'em with cicadas for their young to eat.. Single big-ass wasp coming from a hole in the ground sure sounds like a cicada killer.
>>
>>7928782
Weird, I never saw a cicada the entire 21 years I was there. Perhaps thats because that thing was killing them all though.

Also can we talk about how wasps kill bees which helps dwindle their population and apparently wasps are also pollinators?

does honey come in various textures/viscosities/thicknesses? is some honey "lighter" than other honey? why?
>>
>>7929329
>does honey come in various textures/viscosities/thicknesses?

Normally the variation is small, but temperature and humidity changes can make some thicker than others.

>>color
The type of flowers used by the bees affect the color. So does the degree of filtration applied to the honey. And finally, the temperature can affect this too. If the honey crystallizes then it will take on a pale color because the crystals scatter light. Warming the honey up to melt the crystals will revert it back to its previous color.

thanks for the swift response.

I had a dream last night that I was in a magical castle. On the mantle there was a big bowl of honey with some French words written on it. There were various flavorings floating around in the honey-- thyme, lavender, pomegranate seeds, lemon peel, rosemary, just all kinds of stuff like that. I went to smell the honey and noticed that it had a rather thin texture with a light color. Unfortunately I woke up before tasting it.

What's the deal with "white gold" honey? Have you seen the stuff before? It's like a thick paste in a jar, white in color. Some kind of unrefined honey or some byproduct of honey?
>>
>>7929362

I've never seen the name "white gold" honey. But I'm guessing it's probably just honey that's been partially crystallized on purpose to make it have a more spreadable consistency. I have seen products like that (though different brand names) and they are whitish in color.

If you took that honey, heated it, and let it cool it would look exactly like normal "amber" honey. The "white" color is the light scattering that I was talking about in the earlier post.

I'm not OP, BTW. Just making that clear.
>>
I'm jealous op. I want to be a beekeeper someday.

this is the stuff I was talking about.

according to their website...

>WHITE GOLD HONEY is an unheated, unfiltered, untreated, unprocessed pure raw honey from pristine red clover fields in Northern Canada. It is hand packed, and is not a "whipped" or "spun" honey. It self-solidifies soon after extraction from the hive due to its extremely low moisture content. It is a healthy sweetener because raw honey contains enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and nutrients in its natural state.
>WHITE GOLD HONEY is produced by the white nectar derived from various red clover flowers. Eight generations of beekeepers have been strategically placing the hives in massive unsprayed fields, which have never been treated with chemicals or toxins. It is exquisitely mild, which makes it a wonderful spread on toast, English muffins, biscuits, corn bread, pancakes, etc.

blah bla blah

I don't really care about the sales pitch, I just wanna know what it is.

>But I'm guessing it's probably just honey that's been partially crystallized on purpose to make it have a more spreadable consistency.

You're probably right.

I harvested nearly 4 gallons this year and spawned a brood of another couple thousand bees. Now I'm trying to find another queen.

I keep bees and produce my own honey but I've never had it turn out like that. However, the qualities of the honey are heavily dependent on the time of year the batch was harvested i.e. different flowers, temperature and rainfall.
Pic related is my unheated(unpasteurized), untreated, unprocessed honey. The only filter it went through was cheese cloth since most people don't like eating chunks of wax, and bee parts in their honey. The left bottle from my May batch and the right bottle if from my July batch I got a few days ago.
>>
>>7929438
>I just wanna know what it is.

The description makes it clear:
>> It self-solidifies soon after extraction from the hive due to its extremely low moisture content

i.e. because it's low in moisture it crystalizes on its own.

You could do the same thing to any kind of honey by letting some of the moisture evaporate. That's exactly what was meant by "crystallization" in earlier posts.

Some bees live underground like ants instead of in a hive.

There is a type of Australian bee that does,

how long do the bees live for? do you have to replace them after a while?

if you steal all their honey then they can't feed their babies and maintain numbers.

Apparently, I got "raw" honey and it's thick as fuck at room temperature. Is this normal? Costco honey seems to be fine though.

What a drone
>>
>>7931559
>Is this normal?

Yes. Different honeys have different viscosities due to their moisture content. The more water the more runny they are. If you want it more runny you can either warm it up a little, or mix a little water into it.
>>
>>7926830
>maybe once a week at most.

That's a workload I can handle... how many times a year do you need to empty out the honey?
>>
Do you do it the old fashioned way or do you use those new hives?

The ones you just flick the switch and honey comes out without having to disturb the bees?

I'm thinkin of gettin one of those but forgot was it was called. Some Aussie invention.

OP have you seen the documentary "More Than Honey" ? How similar is it to what you do?

Most beekeepers and biologists do not really care about songle bees, but about the health of the "bee hive" superorganism.
A beekeeper demonstrated this to me with killing 2 bees just because, and telling us that the hive is obviously still fine.
Also: this is a public service announcement. Advis all gummy bear factorys in your area to cloes their goddamn windows or bees will come and steal their raw sugary gummy bear mass while it is still liquid. This may lead to funny coloured honey combs. ( true story)

I was thinking about this the other day.
When I was at school it was the the book we studied for GCSE English.
We were told the under lying theme was loneliness or solitude or some faggot shit like that.

It's actually about how retards need to be shot because they're a danger to themselves and society generally.
>>
I am late, but is it true that the honey is different for each flower variety the bees have access?
>>
>>7926885
when one stings you, you can see that it was a bee because their back part with stinger and a still pumping poison reservoir falls right of their ass and keeps poisoning you. That is why the die.
If it lives, it was a wasp.
