TYL that Coke zero is Classic Coke/original recipe with artificial sweeteners, and Diet Coke is New Coke with artificial sweeteners.

That's the major difference. New Coke was a giant bomb, but the diet version sold, since the 1980's was the beginning of the diet food craze, so they kept it that way after bringing back Classic Coke. Coke Zero was launched to boost sagging sales of full sugar Classic Coke, it tastes identical.
